Bringing these hands-on atomic model kits into our classroom at Dyett High School for the Arts has fundamentally changed how my chemistry students understand the invisible world of chemistry. When the packages first arrived and we opened them, my students reacted with pure excitement. Their eyes lit up as they unpacked the brightly colored atomic spheres and flexible bond connectors, immediately piecing them together. As creative, visual learners, transitioning from two-dimensional textbook drawings to tactile, 3D structures made chemistry feel real, approachable, and exciting to them from day one.\r\n\r\nThese resources have made a profound impact on my chemistry students by turning abstract theoretical concepts into a physical, hands-on reality. During our lesson on chemical bonding and molecular geometry, students worked in small groups to build molecules like water ($H_2O$), carbon dioxide ($CO_2$), and methane ($CH_4$). The biggest breakthrough happened when students began manipulating the models to see electron pair repulsion in real time; one student who had been struggling with VSEPR theory held up their bent $H_2O$ model and exclaimed, \"Oh, I see it now—the unshared electrons are actually pushing the hydrogens down!\" That instant lightbulb moment proved just how powerful tactile learning is for our young artists.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, our next steps involve taking these molecular models into our upcoming unit on chemical reactions and organic chemistry. Students will use the kits to physically break reactant bonds and rearrange the atoms into products, helping them master the law of conservation of mass in a deeply memorable way. They will also build complex organic polymers and connect their molecular structures to artistic materials like dyes and synthetic fibers. Thank you for empowering my chemistry students to touch, build, and truly master the microscopic world!","fullyFundedDate":1763573620808,"projectUrl":"project/hands-on-atoms-and-moleculeswhere-curio/9718183/","projectTitle":"Hands-on Atoms and Molecules—Where Curiosity Meets Chemistry!","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. JULIAN","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10174111_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1757298855589","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10174111"},{"teacherId":9304377,"projectId":10157335,"letterContent":"Incoporating a book that includes not only the history of Chicago's school closure but the one that students sit in daily is essential in ensuring students know why education — specifically public education matters. \r\n\r\nNow that we have a class set— I will promote that all freshman teachers teach this book and its communal and historic concepts to our students. When the students first saw the bins overflowing with fresh markers, colored pencils, and stacks of bright Post-it notes, the room was buzzing. One student laughed and asked, \"Are we finally making math look good?\" Seeing their faces light up made it clear that these aren't just art supplies to them—they are permission to be creative, organized, and engaged in a subject that often feels intimidating and \"gray.\"\r\n\r\nWe are currently putting these resources to work by color-coding complex algebraic transformations. In a recent lesson, students used the Post-it notes to track shifts in graphs, physically moving the \"points\" across their desks to see how changing a constant affects the entire equation. Our next step is a \"Collaborative Mapping\" project where teams will use the markers and colored pencils to create large-scale visual proofs of their work.
