The basketballs and ping pong table have brought a whole new level of energy and excitement to our gym.\r\n\r\nWhen the materials first arrived, the students were absolutely thrilled—smiles everywhere! Many couldn't believe we had brand-new basketballs to use, and they were eager to start shooting, passing, and dribbling right away. The quality of the equipment has made a huge difference in their ability to participate confidently and safely.\r\n\r\nWe've already integrated the new basketballs into our lessons, and the improvement in engagement and skill development has been incredible. The students are more focused, enthusiastic, and excited to learn. The ping pong table has sparked so much interest that we're now in discussions about starting an official ping pong club, which will give students even more ways to connect, compete, and stay active after school.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, we're planning a student-faculty basketball game—a fun event that will bring our school community together and give students a chance to show off the skills they've been practicing with the new equipment.\r\n\r\nYour donation has done more than provide supplies—it has created opportunities, inspired joy, and helped strengthen our school culture through movement and play. Using Just Read It as a guide, we had some really thoughtful and productive professional development sessions. We explored ways to encourage students to read independently and looked closely at how to connect their book choices to the standards we're responsible for teaching. One big takeaway for us was just how accessible Amato's strategies are—he makes it easy to cover the required content using texts that are actually engaging and meaningful for students. That shift has helped us rethink how we structure reading time and how we bring more student voice into our lessons.\r\n\r\nAcross grade levels, we've already seen how this change is making an impact. Students are more engaged, they're talking about books with each other, and many are starting to see themselves as readers in a new way. It's been exciting to watch. What started as a professional learning opportunity has grown into something bigger—it's changed how we approach reading instruction, and it's made our classrooms more joyful, connected spaces. We're so grateful for your support in helping us get there.","fullyFundedDate":1733274704058,"projectUrl":"project/reading-joy-the-magic-of-independent-re/8867099/","projectTitle":"Reading Joy: The Magic of Independent Reading","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. G","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp3123924_orig.jpg?crop=537,537,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1756770281928","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/dsa-lmc"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_1437","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":1755,"numTeachers":108,"percentFrplEligible":38,"percentAsian":3,"percentBlack":23,"percentWhite":35,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":30,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"6 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"16.2:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":67.0,"schoolId":1437,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Durham School of the Arts on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Durham School of the Arts","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/north-carolina/durham-public-schools/durham-school-of-the-arts/1437"}
