Your support helped us restock essential supplies like clay, paint, brushes, and glazes—materials that gave our students the freedom to express themselves and tell their stories through art.\r\n\r\nMany of our students have faced social, emotional, and economic challenges, especially in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. With your help, they were able to explore clay work for the first time, and the impact was profound. The physical, hands-on process of working with clay proved incredibly therapeutic. Students found comfort in the creative process, and the art room became a safe space where they could reflect, focus, and simply breathe. I saw students come out of their shells, collaborate with classmates, and proudly display work they never thought they could create. These moments of growth and connection wouldn't have been possible without you. You gave them more than supplies—you gave them hope, confidence, and a voice.\r\n\r\n The classroom became more than just a space to learn—it became a healing environment where students could explore their emotions, build relationships, and rediscover joy in learning. Your support made all of this possible, and we are deeply grateful. From our hearts you yours, thank you for believing in our students and in the power of the arts. The new simulated meds will allow them the hands on opportunity to draw up medication from a vial and injecting into a skin pad to get the feel of doing it on a live person. The average reading level is from 7th to 8th grade\r\n\r\n One of the phrases I use in class is: Open Your Mind. Open a Book. Students love to read this book. They can relate.\r\n\r\n S.E. Hinton lived in Tulsa. Some of my students have visited the Outsider Museum with their families. Students will discuss this book with their family members who have read or watched the movie. The anticipation and student interest are high.\r\n\r\n Some of the projects students complete are paired, and some are individual. This provides experience in independent work and teamwork. For students in special education, teamwork can build social skills and confidence in their abilities. \r\n\r\n Students create a characterization chart using the STEAL method for each major character. Then we delve deep into why the reader is supposed to like certain characters and how the author guides us to like other characters. They discuss the elements of the plot and chart it in a diagram. They create a slide deck of music from the era. They discuss slang and language usage in the novel, as in the words \"tuff and tough.\" They rewrite a different ending and make inferences about what might happen to the characters. We talk about the symbolism and meaning found in Ponyboy's poem, and what it means to stay golden. Social issues are discussed, and many students compare the story to their own lives.\r\n\r\n My students love to read this book. If I have them for multiple years or classes, many will ask to read it again!\r\n\r\n Thank you for the gift of books through your generous donations.","fullyFundedDate":1744217027755,"projectUrl":"project/be-an-insider-read-the-outsiders/9242773/","projectTitle":"Be an Insider- Read The Outsiders","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Hicks","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-4_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/6428887"},{"teacherId":10031747,"projectId":9343742,"letterContent":"I want to sincerely thank you for your generous donation of The Hunger Games books to my classroom. I am eager for them to dive into the world of Panem. \r\n\r\nIt's not often that a book on our shelf generates this much anticipation before we have even started the unit, and it has been a joy to see students this enthusiastic about reading. I'm especially grateful that every student, including my Spanish-speaking learners, will have their own copy of the book.\r\n\r\nThis spring, I plan to use The Hunger Games to introduce our students to dystopian literature and explore its powerful political and social themes. It will be a compelling way to engage them in discussions about government, inequality, survival, and resistance. These are all topics that I hope will spark critical thinking and lead to thoughtful, passionate conversations.\r\n\r\nThank you again for supporting our classroom and helping bring literature to life for my students. You can tell by the smiles on their faces. \r\n We are a foundation-level class serving students with different disabilities. The average reading level is from 7th to 8th grade. \r\n We read aloud, mostly. \"Popcorn\" reading is their favorite. They choose who reads after them. Reading aloud helps students stay on track, especially with a complex novel. It is also a way for them to build confidence in their reading skills, such as fluency and comprehension. When we read aloud, I can stop and check for understanding by asking or answering comprehension questions. As we read, students become more interested in the characters and the story elements. Some days we can read a full chapter! \"The Great Gatsby\" is excellent for its focus on character development and social commentary. \r\n In Chapter VII, the pivotal chapter, I ask the students to read independently. Faced with jeers and cries of, \"No, don't make us,\" I smile. I know the changes have already begun, interest is growing. By now, they love the story and look forward to daily reading. They begin chapter 7. The next morning, they step into class discussing the book. They sit down and read. Many will ask to read the rest of the book on their own. Audio is provided, and some do listen and follow along. \r\n One project we complete each year is a mural of the different social issues, including the themes that are presented in the novel. Students will organically relate the issues in the novel to current issues as they discuss, draw, and write.\r\n Another project is the dodecahedron activity in some of the pictures. Students are asked to write about 10 different elements on each side: characterization, theme, setting, conflict, summarize chapters, symbolism, and write a new ending. This project uses critical thinking skills and creativity. \r\n Students love this book, and I love to teach it! They get excited and are willing to read more outside their comfort zone.
