Being from a Title I school, many of my students have been largely impacted by poverty and this has only been compounded as a result of COVID-19. Many of my students have hectic schedules which include extremely early arrivals to school due to parent drop-off necessities and extracurricular activities prior to school. Several of my upperclassmen have taken advantage of the opportunities provided to them and have opted to take concurrent classes at our local college. This means they often miss breakfast and/or lunch provided by the school. I see so many of my students working late hours in an effort to support their families and themselves and then turning around and having to start back over the next day. They work tirelessly to help those they love.
Coming into school with growling stomachs is a huge inhibitor of learning. When students come in focused on hunger pangs, it makes it near impossible to care about science. With these snacks, my students will be better equipped to begin the learning process in my room. I have included gluten-free options to also accommodate those students I have with sensitivities and intolerances.
Keeping food in my room for kids is something I have done for several years now and financed myself which has resulted in obvious limitations. It will be a blessing to know I’ll be able to serve any student that may need a little help making it to their next meal.
