As students have transferred to my class through out the year, I have been able to provide them with a notebook. This makes them feel welcome and prepared during their transitional period. We started checking out independent reading novels, and the scanner makes checking out a book feel more legit. It also helps me organize my library. The database I am able to use now to check out books keeps stats on what my students read, and provides summaries of books, so students can easily find their next read. The scanner has made reading much more accessible to students, and thus will make them better readers. \r\nLastly, I'm so excited to use some of the materials I haven't used yet. Reading is so important because it fosters empathy. As the year is coming to a close, many of my students are working on finishing their last novel of the school year. My whole reason for selecting the books I did was so that my students could see themselves, and others, in the stories we read. I wanted to incorporate more diverse texts into our classroom. \r\n\r\nOur first unit after receiving our donations involved literature circles. I read the class \"I am Golden\" and we talked about various things that stood out to us in the text. This was a low stakes way to introduce the idea of lit circles. Next, I gave each student a role sheet and this time I read Marisol Macdonald no Combina/Does Not Match. This book was exciting because it is written in English and Spanish. Knowing that I had a large ESL population in my class (not all Spanish speaking) I read both the English and Spanish. My classes were so engaged and although my Spanish is pretty rusty, I explained that I ask them to speak in English all the time, even when they aren't comfortable so the least I could do was read in Spanish. Students filled out the lit role sheet while I read and afterwards, we talked about the various roles and what they put down on their sheets. \r\n\r\nThe novels provided have been added to our classroom library and students are enjoying having a larger variety of texts to choose from. We start class with 5 minutes of reading every day and these additional titles have been well received by all students. \r\n\r\nWe are eternally grateful for the kindness you all have shown us.","fullyFundedDate":1731968417344,"projectUrl":"project/seeing-themselves-in-their-books/8558351/","projectTitle":"Seeing Themselves in Their Books!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Jackson","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp7535153_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1722973189178","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7535153"},{"teacherId":9421627,"projectId":8780947,"letterContent":"My students were so excited when they saw their new portable whiteboards. After, during a class discussion, we point out which responses are correct and how we can adjust the others to make them accurate. \r\n\r\nAnother version of a Gallery Walk that we did recently is where I printed a problem on paper and taped it to the board. The board is then used for students to work out the problem, arrive at a solution, write their solution on their paper, erase their board, and then move on to the next problem. Activities like a Gallery Walk save me time and paper as I do not have to print a multiple-page assignment per student. These activities also engage students in the content and connect with their peers. \r\n\r\nYour generous donation has made our journey more efficient and engaging.","fullyFundedDate":1726688830774,"projectUrl":"project/enhancing-math-engagement-and-collaborat/8780947/","projectTitle":"Enhancing Math Engagement and Collaboration","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Carrillo-Mariano","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9421627_orig.jpg?crop=900,900,x0,y246&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1726614907325","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9421627"},{"teacherId":9526220,"projectId":8748962,"letterContent":"By introducing these new young adult books, I've seen my students become more motivated to engage in reading.
