While I understand that the majority of these students are not yet able to understand the English words they are reading, to watch them sit, brows furrowed, trying to make sense of the text so that they can experience a topic that has piqued their interest, makes the long road ahead of me far easier to manage. This group is challenging. They put up such tough exteriors and cause problems for the majority of their teachers. But in my classroom, they have been given gifts: books that they treasure, books that are new and exciting, and that include words from their languages, themes with which they are familiar, cultural references that help them connect to their own experiences. And their behavior reflects mutual respect, and their engagement is noteworthy, and they now want to improve.\r\n\r\n Some of these students are brand new to the US, while others have been struggling in the English language for many years. They've never engaged with school. Some have never been to school before arriving in the US. They never cuddled up next to their favorite adult and nestled in close, soaking in the beautiful language of a children's picture book. Some of them had never held a book, a real book, before. They never realized reading could bring them pleasure rather than frustration, or that books were meant to be enjoyed, to transport them for a brief moment to somewhere other than the here and now. \r\n\r\nAnd what is happening in my classroom because of the impact of your donation reaches far beyond exponential gains in literacy. Maybe these students will grow in Lexile level this year, maybe they won't. But what has already begun to change is the way they feel about themselves. They feel seen. They feel like they belong. They feel like they can be honest about their lives, their struggles, and their lack of accountability prior to entering my classroom. Their language level has to grow before their literacy level will see measurable gains, but in part because of your generous donation, they now have the desire to grow. And some of these kids had never really thought about trying to learn before because they just assumed it was impossible.\r\n\r\nThank you for impacting the futures of my students. Books greatly helped change the trajectory of my own life. And as a first generation college graduate myself, who now holds a Master's degree and more, I can tell you that the power of reading and the power of education opens doors that might have otherwise gone completely unnoticed. Our potential is unlimited, if only we are given the opportunity to dream.","fullyFundedDate":1787192849781,"projectUrl":"project/building-a-diverse-classroom-library/10498014/","projectTitle":"Building a Diverse Classroom Library","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Moore","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp7795518_orig.png?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1786911123079","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/eldmsmoore"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_64225","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":1891,"numTeachers":103,"percentFrplEligible":56,"percentAsian":12,"percentBlack":20,"percentWhite":41,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":21,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":0,"percentMultiracialImputed":3,"gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"18.4:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":100.0,"schoolId":64225,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Dulaney High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Dulaney High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/maryland/baltimore-county-public-schools/dulaney-high-school/64225"}
