When middle school students are hungry, their energy levels drop, their attention spans shorten, and they may struggle to regulate their emotions, leading to decreased academic performance and increased behavioral challenges. For many students, especially those from food-insecure households, school may be the only place where they have reliable access to nourishment. When basic needs like hunger are unmet, it becomes difficult, if not impossible, for students to focus on learning, collaborate with peers, or retain information. Simply put, a hungry student is not in the right state of mind to succeed.\r\n\r\n By providing snacks in the classroom, we are not only meeting a physical need but also creating a more inclusive and supportive learning environment. Snack availability helps ensure that all students, regardless of their home situation, have the fuel they need to stay focused and engaged throughout the school day. It removes the stigma some students may feel about asking for food and fosters a classroom culture where every child feels seen, cared for, and ready to participate. Thanks to your generous support, these snacks help create a space where all students can thrive academically, emotionally, and socially. Your donation goes far beyond food, it helps level the playing field so every student has a fair chance to learn and grow.","fullyFundedDate":1746698846161,"projectUrl":"project/mid-year-classroom-restock/9106929/","projectTitle":"Mid-Year Classroom Restock","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Augustinos","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9661368_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1755713794736","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/augustinos"},{"teacherId":650279,"projectId":6655155,"letterContent":"Your donation means everything to me and, more importantly, to the students that I teach. My scholars participated in a rock cycle lab that no other 8th science teacher did with their students. The burning of the materials flocked students that i did not teach to my classroom. They wanted to know what were my scholars doing and could they do it too. As for my scholars this activity served as an incentive as well. Due to the factor that my students love hands on labs their behavior tightened up drastically, because the did not want to miss out on this opportunity. The lab activity, provoked curiosity. Students wanted to know if the airhead candy still had the same taste after it melted and resolidified? The asked can we taste the Igneous rock? Boy was I so elated. They were regurgitate the rock cycle information that had been learning through text. I granted their request. After tasting the new formed rock, they also conclude this is a new material and that it did not taste like what it did before they melted the airhead and they asked why. This allowed us to revisit the concept of chemical reactions. My students were learning so much at one time they were mind blown. It was a joy to see them operate in their pure innocent state of a child ear to explore. Thank you for providing this experience for my scholars to partake in. Thank you for the last memories that will go with them from this activity. This excavation activity allowed them to see inside a snippet of the work life of a paleontologist scientist. This activity open their minds to understanding the important of recording data, human errors and understanding the significance of making and utilizing a fossil record. This activity challenged their preconceived knowledge about scientist that worked with rocks and the earth's layers, that's not all scientist who work with the earth layers are geologist. \r\n\r\nAs we were moving forward in the Mystery fossil unit students would often refer back to the activity to develop new questions to help guide them to the identity of the fossilized organism they were trying to organize. As they built their own fossil record they would revisit their initial thoughts forcing them to rely on evidence to support their ideas. With the critical information they were unlocking the students did not realize that they were harnessing skills that are used cross content. Things such as reading and comprehending timelines, Analyzing data on graphs, Writing scientific justifications were all skill sets there were gaining. \r\nThis one activity was the introduction of a unit needed to perk up such peculiar minds of our youth and indeed it served its purpose. \r\nThank you for making it happen.","fullyFundedDate":1724256314783,"projectUrl":"project/we-are-paleontologists-lets-dig/8661965/","projectTitle":"We are Paleontologists! We use them to help students focus during independent work time and group activities. One specific project we recently did involve a science experiment on plant growth, where students had to observe and record data over several weeks. Many students who previously struggled to stay engaged with lengthy observations were able to concentrate better and stay on task with the fidget tools in their hands. By using the fidgets, they were able to keep their hands occupied while thinking critically about the experiment, which ultimately led to more thoughtful and accurate data collection.\r\n\r\nWhen the students first saw the fidget tools, their reactions were filled with excitement and curiosity. Many of them were initially unsure about how the fidgets would be used in a learning context, but once they saw how they could help with focus, they were eager to try them out. Some students even began using them during class discussions, finding that it helped them to stay calm and more attentive. It was clear that having these tools made a difference in their ability to participate and engage in lessons.\r\n\r\nThe next step for my students will be to apply their newfound focus and engagement to a larger research project. They will be choosing topics related to ecosystems, conducting research, and presenting their findings in a multimedia format. The fidgets will continue to be an integral part of this project, as students will be using them during research time, brainstorming sessions, and while preparing their presentations. The goal is for them to stay focused and reduce stress while managing a big project, helping them build both academic and self-regulation skills.","fullyFundedDate":1723689388235,"projectUrl":"project/enhancing-learning-with-fidget-tools-a/8658588/","projectTitle":"Enhancing Learning with Fidget Tools: A Practical Approach","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Augustinos","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9661368_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1755713794736","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/augustinos"},{"teacherId":650279,"projectId":6655552,"letterContent":"Thank you for the mouthpieces, ligatures, and reeds that you graciously donated to our program!
