We are in a low-income, Title One district. We are doing everything in our power to raise our scores and get the students to improve their comprehension. We have purchased a new reading program, but there is one component that is missing and that is novels! We have an anthology and there are short stories and selections, but nothing beats a novel or chapter book. In the sixth grade, we want them to be reading independently and to build their reading stamina. I always explain to my students that if they want to become a better athlete they need to practice, so if we want to become better readers, we need to read more. That's where you came in.\r\nI chose the book, Holes because it is a classic and is on grade level, while also being a high interest novel. When I told the students that we received enough copies for the whole class, they loudly cheered. We have been using a method of teaching where we read four chapters and then watch the movie up until that point in the story. That helps the students visualize what they are reading and increases their interest as well. They have loved the characters and the back story and how the author brought everything together, so seamlessly. Thanks to your assistance, our students now have comfortable spaces to enjoy while completing any number of daily activities, from computer-based work to independent reading, to having a space to decompress...our room was in such desperate need of the cozy seats that your donation helped provide.\r\n\r\nStudents enjoy the seating daily. We use some of the seats in the comfortable reading and relaxation/sensory area, but fortunately the donations were able to fund a couple of additional seats that we have spaced throughout the room as well. Now, students have the option of several cozy spots throughout the room to enjoy while learning or relaxing...or while learning in a relaxing way!\r\n\r\nI cannot fully express how excited our students were to receive their seating upgrades. When they first opened the box, there were eyes wide with joy and the sincerest delighted smiles throughout our room. My assistant teachers and I all thank you so much for helping to bring students this moment of joy, and some seating that they will continue to make great use of through the rest of this school year and into the next. We thank you humbly and deeply for choosing us and our project.
