Many of them had never sewn before, so getting to hold real sewing tools and materials made them feel like true artists and designers. Several students immediately began sorting through the fabrics, planning and talking about what kind of \"ugly doll\" they wanted to create.\r\n\r\nWe used these supplies for a hands-on project where students learned basic sewing techniques like threading a needle, tying knots, stitching fabric pieces together, and adding buttons or embellishments. Each student designed and created their own version of an \"ugly doll,\" a quirky, one-of-a-kind character made from mismatched fabrics and fun shapes. It was incredible to watch students who were nervous at first gain confidence as they stitched their projects together.\r\n\r\nBeyond creating their dolls, students quickly began applying their new skills in practical ways. One student even discovered a hole in her pants during class and was able to fix it on her own using the sewing techniques she had just learned. It was such a great reminder of how creative projects like this also teach useful life skills. The competition followed the engineering design process: identifying a problem (designing a vehicle to meet specific criteria), brainstorming solutions, designing, building prototypes, testing, evaluating, and redesigning for optimization. The class was separated into two teams building five vehicles in four class periods (Monday-Thursday). The teams faced numerous challenges in building functional vehicles, which required them to think critically, troubleshoot issues and find creative solutions. Both teams successfully built five functional vehicles to race on Friday. The final score was 2 to 3, with Team 2 winning the competition; however, after the team competition, the top performing vehicles then raced for the best overall. The Basic Mousetrap Vehicle II was the top performer. \r\n\r\nBy using the mousetrap vehicle fun pack to create a team competition significantly amplied the educational impact. It transformed a potentially individual learning activity into a dynamic and collaborative experience that not only reinforced STEM concepts but also cultivated crucial 21st-century skills (teamwork, communication, problem-sovling, and creatvity)- all within an engaging and motivating project. \r\n\r\nThe abiliity to acquire the mousetrap vehicle fun pack and the solar car kit provided our students with the materials to bring a dynamic and practical element to our class. During the month of May my students will design and build their own solar car using the solar car kit. Your contribution directly fostered creativity, problem-solving skills, and an understanding of fundamental scientific and engineering concepts.
