Additionally, I underwent and completed LETRs literacy training last year, which greatly enhanced my professional development in teaching literacy. The combination of these two new experiences gradually led me to realize that certain materials were missing from my room. Thanks to your generosity, these materials are now present and ready to be utilized in the upcoming school year!\r\n\r\nIn addition to practical items, like hand sanitizer and adhesive wall strips, my classroom will benefit from \"whisper phones,\" which will help beginners listen to and analyze their pronunciation of sounds. This is particularly useful for nonnative speakers, students with limited formal education, and students learning in small groups while their peers are working nearby. I was also grateful to receive signage to create a \"sound wall,\" which provides an anchor chart reference of vowel, consonant, and other sounds. I had visions of seeds failing to sprout or worse, sprouting and then wilting before the students' eyes. However, we took it one day at a time and ultimately cultivated not only plants, but also some meaningful interactions between our students and the garden.\r\n\r\nI started involving students in the garden in January, by planting turnip seeds and a few \"milk jug greenhouses\" of lettuce seeds. I immediately noticed some logistical problems, and that is what prompted me to create my DonorsChoose project. The supplies I received from donors like you helped me maximize the impact of our brief excursions to the garden, without impacting classroom time. For example, the gloves allowed more students to participate in gardening activities and lessened the time we had to spend washing hands later. The soil, tools, and planting pots allowed students to plant seeds and later, repot the seedlings. \r\n\r\nBy June, I was able to involve all four of my classes in the garden, provide special gardening club activities, share materials with four other teachers, and produce two batches of turnip greens, as well as some basil and pepper plants. Our school, as many others, does not receive the funding necessary to continuously update the materials our students use, especially technology. We are also in a special circumstance as our school population grows constantly throughout the year. So, it makes it even more difficult to keep materials updated and increased.\r\n\r\nIt is an amazing feeling to see our student's faces light up as they see brand new items. We had been working with older headphones that are frayed, only one side works, or the microphone piece is just dangling for dear life. So, they are especially excited to see ones that are in perfect condition. It was also at a perfect time that we received them right before testing started. Our students need to complete a test that involves listening and speaking items. So there was no stress in having to make sure the headphones worked. \r\n\r\nStudents also have a chance to use them during their SEL (social emotional learning) free time. So they can listen to music, audiobooks, or watch educational videos. Now students can pick up a headphone without having to waste time checking if it works. They also don't have to race each other and fight over working ones. \r\n\r\nSo many benefits come from something that may seem so simple. Again I appreciate your time and consideration. At the store, they were able to peruse the prizes you helped fund and make decisions about what to \"buy\" with their points. Many students chose items for themselves to enjoy, and a few obtained gifts to give a friend or family member during the upcoming holidays. Students had to exercise their math and decision-making skills during their shopping experience. It was wonderful to see their excitement and concentration as they selected their rewards, and to see them show off their items to peers throughout the day.\r\n\r\nDojo stores like these are the cornerstone of my school's classroom management approach. It's a great way for students to learn self-regulation, by connecting their behavior to a token economy. At the end of the day during dismissal, they loved to challenge each other to a game of Uno and the classroom is filled with chatter and laughter. During class, we would use the buzzers to practice what we learned in our lessons, and every time we finished whole group instruction, students would say, \"Miss! Lets play a game!\" The buzzers were an amazing tool that had all the students engaged and excited to participate in class activities. It helped them develop skills in phonetics and word segmentation, reading and writing.\r\nSome students even wanted to say thank you themselves.
