The paper trimmer and Ziploc bags have made my job much easier when preparing and storing matching cards and other activity materials for students.\r\n\r\nMy students especially loved using the magnetic wands in a fun maze activity. They guided pom-poms with googly eyes through a maze, helping them reach a destination while learning through play and hands-on exploration. The Flex-Space storage boxes have also been very helpful in organizing items I use at the whiteboard, such as calendar pieces and remote controls.\r\n\r\nAdditionally, the jump ropes have provided a great way for students—especially the girls—to stay active and engaged during recess. The kitchen scale has been a wonderful tool during our learning stations, where students explored measurement units. Thanks to you, I was able to provide two different magnification options to a student with extreme nearsightedness who is awaiting a new pair of glasses. I was able to offer fidget toys and chair bands to help students use sensory input and movement to stay focused during lessons. I was able to assist students in tracking time limits with a large, magnetic countdown timer.\r\n\r\nI wanted to share that my students were initially confused by the chair bands. \"Teacher, what are those? What are they for?\" and similar questions were asked by several kids the first time they saw them. Some students were so suspicious that they traded out a banded chair for one without a band. However, after about a week of trying out the bands, most students were delighted by them. Just last week, two students made a point of telling me that they loved the bands. According to the social worker who serves my school, the most needed items for our students are winter boots, children's sizes 4-7. I've enjoyed seeing kids wear their new boots to school, knowing that they were made possible by generous donors like you.\r\n\r\nFunding for this project allowed me to purchase 13 pairs of children's boots for my school, for a cost of almost $500. The boots I selected were good quality and in neutral colors. Hopefully, they will last for several winters and perhaps be passed down to a younger sibling or family friend, so the impact of your donation will last quite awhile!\r\n\r\nI'm always amazed by the support my Donors Choose projects receive from the community. I had visions of seeds failing to sprout or worse, sprouting and then wilting before the students' eyes. However, we took it one day at a time and ultimately cultivated not only plants, but also some meaningful interactions between our students and the garden.\r\n\r\nI started involving students in the garden in January, by planting turnip seeds and a few \"milk jug greenhouses\" of lettuce seeds. I immediately noticed some logistical problems, and that is what prompted me to create my DonorsChoose project. The supplies I received from donors like you helped me maximize the impact of our brief excursions to the garden, without impacting classroom time. For example, the gloves allowed more students to participate in gardening activities and lessened the time we had to spend washing hands later. The soil, tools, and planting pots allowed students to plant seeds and later, repot the seedlings. \r\n\r\nBy June, I was able to involve all four of my classes in the garden, provide special gardening club activities, share materials with four other teachers, and produce two batches of turnip greens, as well as some basil and pepper plants.
