Using the PocketLab sensors you helped provide, students collected real-time data on light intensity at school and in their neighborhoods at night. This hands-on investigation helped them better understand the environmental, health, and ecological impacts of excessive artificial lighting. They were especially intrigued to learn how light pollution affects animals like migratory birds and sea turtles. As part of our collaboration, students also exchanged postcards with our partner class, sharing their findings and ideas for solutions.\r\n\r\nWhen the materials first arrived, students were immediately excited to explore the new technology. Many had never used scientific sensors before, and they quickly began planning where and when to collect their data. The project sparked thoughtful conversations and inspired a deeper awareness of the issue. As a final step, students proposed practical solutions—like using shielded outdoor lights and reducing unnecessary nighttime lighting. Some students even used this project to spark ideas for their science projects and end of year projects, taking pride in applying their learning to make a real-world impact.
