Having a washer and dryer in our classroom gives our students the opportunity to practice an everyday skill that can help them become more independent at school and at home.\r\n\r\nOur laundry lessons break the process into manageable steps: sorting items, measuring detergent, choosing settings, drying, folding, and putting everything away. A single load gives us opportunities to practice following directions, making choices, and working together. We can turn something as simple as washing classroom towels into a meaningful lesson, with each student participating at their own level. Having the equipment right here in our classroom means we can give students repeated, hands-on practice as part of our regular routines.\r\n\r\nOur next step is to help students take responsibility for more of the process, using visual directions and gradually needing fewer reminders. For one student, that might mean sorting a load independently; for another, it might mean folding and putting away towels. Those individual steps matter.\r\n\r\nThank you for giving our students the tools and opportunities to practice these skills. One of our first projects with our new stove was making homemade soft pretzel bites. Students participated in the entire process from preparing and measuring ingredients, mixing and shaping the dough, to safely using the kitchen equipment and cleaning up afterward.\r\n\r\nOnce the pretzels were finished, our students packaged them and passed them out to staff around the school. They were so proud to be able to share something they had made themselves!\r\n\r\nWe have also been putting our new refrigerator/freezer to work. Our students made ice in the freezer and used it to prepare ice-cold lemonade, which they then delivered to staff. These simple activities give our students the opportunity to practice so many important skills at once, including following directions, measuring, food and kitchen safety, communication, teamwork, customer service, independence, and completing a task from beginning to end.\r\n\r\nThe students were incredibly excited when they first saw the new appliances, but seeing them actually use the equipment has been even more exciting. They are beginning to see that these resources belong in their learning environment and are tools they can use to become more independent.\r\n\r\nOur next steps are to continue introducing new recipes and giving students more responsibility during each activity. We also plan to incorporate these skills into Bulldog Bites Café, where students will prepare food and drinks, fill orders, interact with staff, deliver items, clean their work areas, and practice real-world job and life skills.\r\n\r\nThank you for giving our students the opportunity to learn by doing. With your generous donation through, \"Learning Through Game Play\" Students will be taking the game of Life and putting a creative and personal spin on it. One day 1 we played through the game to make sure everyone knew what to do. I introduced the rules to ensure everyone knew about all the choices, including the degree path, the stocks, and the kids option. All students got to play through and have some competition with their groups. \r\nThe next step is that students will be adding rules to the game to reflect real life personal experiences that they may face in life. Students will be brainstorming as teams to find creative new rules for the game as an add on with the Game of Life. Some students are creating actual jobs in the game like banker, child care worker, mechanic, broker, and real-estate agent. This group wants to have the game of Life slow down and people take their responsibilities seriously to get even more money at retirement. \r\nSome students are adding elements of interest with their money. Some are doing compound interest with ever spin and some are forcing loans on people. Adding simple math mechanics to the game is forcing them to really think about the choices they make and how it can affect them in the future. Some are adding lifestyle choices, like renting cars and houses, adding midlife crises into the game as well as lottery winnings (and losing). Its great to see how students are able to apply what we learn in class and add it to a childhood board game for them to see a practical use in a short amount of time. \r\nIt is thanks to your generous donations that I get to do this with over 200 students a year!
