This has led to noticeable improvements in focus, engagement, and overall energy throughout the school day. \r\n\r\nStudents are better able to concentrate during lectures, participate in discussions, and remain for tutoring or extended learning opportunities without the distraction of hunger. I have also seen an increase in students taking advantage of support services, as they are no longer leaving early due to fatigue or lack of access to food.\r\n\r\nThe availability of snacks has helped create a more supportive and equitable learning environment where students feel cared for and prepared to succeed. In fact, students are excited to get to their college campus so that they can grab a snack before class. \r\n\r\nOverall, this project has removed a critical barrier to learning and has strengthened our students' ability to persist and thrive in rigorous early college coursework.","fullyFundedDate":1773621876181,"projectUrl":"project/fuel-for-learning-restocking-our-portab/10121472/","projectTitle":"Fuel for Learning: Restocking Our Portable Snack Pantry","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Kendall","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9313117_orig.jpg?crop=806,806,x0,y163&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1756134524740","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9313117"},{"teacherId":9915909,"projectId":10093655,"letterContent":"We have been having such a weird winter, getting tons of snow, ice, and cold days. The scarves, hats, gloves, and socks got delivered on an exceptionally warm winter day. It took me two days to get them ready for the students. When I did, I was shocked at how useful they were! My high school students added the winter gear into the school store as free items. Students, who never worn scarves before were trying out a new style. Others started using them to block the cold from their mouths and noses on the walk to school. \r\n\r\nThe first day the students made the items available to their peers, a student pulled me aside and said \"I have a really strange question: It's pouring outside and my socks are soaked. Would you happen to have socks?\" That was such surprising question as we've never been able to offer socks before your contribution. He was able to grab a couple fresh pairs of socks so he can focus on school. Another student reported \"This comes at the best time, because I missed laundry day yesterday as I wasn't feeling well.\" \r\n\r\nStudents grabbed what they needed and told their friends about the cold-weather items. Students, in the school store, were able to help out a friend in need. As they learn new signs, students are also developing important communication skills, such as observation, interpretation, and expressive movement. They are learning that language is not only spoken or written, meaning can also be communicated through hand shapes, facial expressions, and body movement.\r\n\r\nThese tools have also supported students in a powerful way beyond our classroom. Many of my students are enrolled in an early-college, level 2 American Sign Language course. Taking a real college class while still in high school, the materials allow them to practice vocabulary, reinforce concepts, and build confidence with the language before and after their college coursework. Because of this support, students can engage more deeply with the material and strengthen the skills they need to succeed at the college level.\r\n\r\nThe results have been incredible. Every student in the class passed their first college ASL course with a grade of C- or higher, earning 3 college credits while still in high school. Some of my quieter students have also discovered confidence through signing, while others love the challenge of mastering a completely new way to communicate. Watching students realize that they are capable of learning a new language, and earning college credit while doing it, has been inspiring. In science, many of the materials students work with—microscope images, diagrams of cells, graphs, and data visualizations—are much easier to interpret in color. Being able to print these resources clearly has helped students better understand structures and patterns that would otherwise be difficult to see in black and white. It has also allowed us to create clearer lab instructions, study guides, and visuals that students can use while working through experiments.\r\n\r\nStudents were especially excited about how much more professional their work looks when they can print in color. We used the printer to prepare displays for the poster boards our students presented at the regional MSEF science fair, including printing their graphs and photos documenting their experimental process and data collection. Having access to color printing helped them present their work clearly and communicate their results more effectively.\r\n\r\nWe also printed many photos of student-created biology models to display on our classroom bulletin board. This has helped showcase their work and celebrate the effort they put into building accurate representations of scientific concepts. The printer has quickly become a regular part of our classroom workflow, supporting both learning and student pride in their work.
