They learn how gear ratios affect speed and strength, how angles change motion, and how different motor types impact performance. These lessons go far beyond textbooks and help students truly understand how systems work.\r\n\r\nWhat excites students most about this project is the opportunity to build a working elevator system for our robot. Elevators are a critical and complex component in competitive robotics, and students are eager to take on the challenge. Being able to assemble a two-stage elevator kit, experiment with 4:1 and 5:1 gear reductions, and use professional-grade hardware like rivets and 90-degree gearboxes makes the experience feel authentic and meaningful. Students are especially motivated by knowing their work directly impacts the performance of their competition robot.\r\n\r\nSeveral students—particularly those interested in engineering, mechanics, and hands-on learning—have really connected with this technology. Some students who may struggle in traditional classroom settings thrive when they are able to build, test, and revise their designs. Others have discovered new interests in mechanical design, programming, or systems engineering through this project. Working together on the build and programming teams helps students develop collaboration, persistence, and confidence. With these supplies, students are able to experiment, make mistakes, and problem-solve just like real engineers, gaining skills that directly support college and career pathways in STEM.","fullyFundedDate":1758112589618,"projectUrl":"project/stem-robotics-elevator-and-gearbox-trai/9705570/","projectTitle":"STEM Robotics: Elevator and Gearbox Training","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. TAYLOR","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9915896_orig.png?crop=352,353,x0,y55&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1738887911294","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9915896"},{"teacherId":9915896,"projectId":9641790,"letterContent":"A dedicated trophy case helps connect that learning to real outcomes by making students' achievements visible. Trophies, plaques, and competition banners represent countless hours spent building, debugging, collaborating, and persevering through setbacks. Having a trophy case gives students a sense of ownership and pride in their program and validates the effort they put into robotics both during and beyond the school day.\r\n\r\nSeveral students have especially warmed to this project, particularly those who don't always receive recognition in traditional academic settings. For these students, robotics is where they shine, and the trophy case serves as a visible reminder that their talents matter. It also inspires younger and future students who walk by the display to imagine themselves as engineers, programmers, and innovators. Because of your generosity, my students now have access to technology that truly changes how they learn. It allows them to interact with lessons instead of just watching or listening. Students can see ideas come to life, practice skills right away, and learn at a pace that works for them. This has helped many students feel more confident and less frustrated, especially when they are learning something challenging.\r\n\r\nWhat has been most surprising is that some of my students, including juniors and seniors, had never used or even seen a graphing calculator before. Having access to this technology has opened up a whole new way of learning for them. Students are excited to explore graphs, test ideas, and immediately see how changes affect their results. Using these tools has made lessons feel more real and connected to the skills they will need after high school.\r\n\r\nSome of the biggest changes have come from students who were once hesitant to participate. With this technology, they feel more comfortable exploring ideas, making mistakes, and learning from them. Students who struggled before are now raising their hands, asking questions, and staying engaged longer. We put them to use right away during our unit on specialized cells. Each student created a model of a different type of cell and used the glue guns and clay to build structures that were sturdy, detailed, and easy to present. The quality of their models improved immediately, and it was great to see them take pride in work that looked clean and intentional.\r\n\r\nTheir reaction when the materials came in was simple but genuine—they were relieved. Many of them had struggled in the past with models falling apart or not looking how they intended. Having the right tools made the assignment feel more manageable, and they were able to focus on the biology rather than fighting with tape and paper.\r\n\r\nOur next step is using these same materials to build a mitosis model. Students will create each stage of cell division and then assemble everything into a complete visual sequence. Thanks to your support, they now have the right tools to make models that are accurate, durable, and clear enough to use for future review. We took time to practice how and when to use the fire blanket, locate and operate the fire extinguisher, and properly rinse eyes at the eye wash station. This led to thoughtful conversations about responsibility, safety procedures, and what scientists do to protect themselves and others during real experiments.\r\n\r\nYour donation allows us to perform a wider range of hands‑on labs with greater confidence, and it helps students understand that safety is an essential part of doing science—not an afterthought.
