Students use the materials during MakerSpace time to build, create, experiment, and solve problems using their own ideas. They have enjoyed combining different pieces and figuring out how they can make something new. One of our favorite moments has been watching students work together to build structures, then proudly explain what they made and how they made it. While they are playing and creating, they are also developing important skills such as fine motor coordination, communication, cooperation, problem-solving, and early STEM thinking.\r\n\r\nWhen the MakerSpace materials first arrived, our students were immediately excited and curious. They couldn't wait to explore the new toys and begin creating. Instead of being given a specific project with one right answer, students were encouraged to use their imaginations and decide what they wanted to make. It was wonderful to see their faces light up as they discovered the different possibilities. Some students began building right away, while others watched their classmates and then joined in. The materials have given our students opportunities to make choices, try new ideas, and learn that it is okay to make mistakes and try again.\r\n\r\nOur next steps are to continue challenging students to become creative problem-solvers through new MakerSpace challenges. We will encourage them to plan what they want to build, choose the materials they need, work with classmates, and talk about their creations. As their confidence grows, we will introduce simple challenges that encourage them to think about balance, shapes, structures, movement, and how things work. I loved seeing their excitement because it showed me that they understood how this new resource would make our classroom more functional and enjoyable.\r\n\r\nMy students are now using the bins during classroom activities and projects, which has given them more independence and responsibility. During a recent project, students were able to take the bins to their work areas, choose the materials they needed, and return the supplies when they were finished. It was such a wonderful moment to watch them work together, share materials, and take ownership of cleaning up their learning space. What may seem like a simple storage shelf has actually helped my students become more organized, responsible, and confident learners.\r\n\r\nAs we move forward with our current lessons and projects, my students will continue using these materials to create, explore, collaborate, and bring their ideas to life. The magnetic strips and writing paper has helped the children write complete sentences and practice their penmanship. The children love to write on the reusable materials using dry erase markers. The student work storage boxes have helped the children keep their materials and work neatly contained so they can independently work on ongoing learning projects.\r\n\r\nThe children are very happy to have scissors and a stapler at the finishing center to complete their work before displaying or presenting. They say that it makes them feel grown up to have these items at their disposal. This has definitely helped with motivation to complete and present projects to the class. \r\n\r\nWe are currently changing curriculums to a more project based learning model and these donated items will be utilized for many years to come.
