They were so excited to hear that other people care about their learning.\r\n\r\nWhen I wrote my project, I had just graduated half of my 6th, 7th, and 8th grade class, so I did not know who the next 5 out of 10 students were. Turns out they are an amazing group of students with autism and other learning needs with cognitive skills ranging from kindergarten to 4th grade. We meet each of them where they are while challenging them with higher expectations than most believe they are capable.\r\n\r\nThe beautiful planters that you donated provided them a greater opportunity than I imagined because the assembly was extremely assessable to them. We were going to have our Project Lead the Way engineering class to build it, but they wanted to try and since I'm steadily telling them that they can do hard things, they believed that they could do it themselves, and they did!\r\n\r\nThe wooden planters were pre-built with pieces that fit into each other with dowels. At one point we got stuck because there were no real directions. One of my students looked at the first planter and said, \"it's upside down.\" He was right! A kid who doesn't read yet and who has a very hard time articulating things solved our problem. Thank you for supporting our efforts towards project based learning.\r\n\r\nAttached are pictures of the building process. Both planters are very well built and thanks to your generous donations, they are looking forward to planting our winter vegetables. Once we have our new grounds person on campus, our principal will have the planters connected to the watering system on campus. Thank you for believing in my students.","fullyFundedDate":1750264211820,"projectUrl":"project/sped-learning-sensory-garden/9329446/","projectTitle":"SPED Learning & Sensory Garden","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Cuthbert","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp7776980_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1746574359707","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7776980"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_74941","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":1020,"numTeachers":41,"percentFrplEligible":85,"percentAsian":1,"percentBlack":12,"percentWhite":3,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":80,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"6 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"24.9:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":66.7,"schoolId":74941,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Desert Willow Magnet Academy on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Desert Willow Magnet Academy","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/palmdale-school-district/desert-willow-intermediate-school/74941"}
