The class set up several iterations of their experiments: some using the pump system, some using 2L bottles and fabric wicks. Students are growing sage, cilantro, peppermint, basil, and green bean plants.\r\n\r\nEveryday, students check on their sprouts. They are responsible for checking and replacing their hydroponic solutions for their plants. They have done some great troubleshooting, as well. Our classroom faces north, and students were concerned we weren't receiving enough sunlight during the day. We purchased a small grow light to have on the plants 24/7 and noticed improvement in plant growth. Students also had trouble getting the very small peppermint seeds to sprout. They decided that our desert climate was drying out the seeds faster than they could keep them moist. Small plastic cups allowed us to create tiny \"greenhouses\". Within a couple days, their peppermint seeds were sprouting! Finally, we have observed roots growing down into the hydroponic solutions below. Students are amazed by this!","fullyFundedDate":1731080617157,"projectUrl":"project/can-we-grow-plants-without-soil/8836852/","projectTitle":"Can We Grow Plants Without Soil?","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Hovey","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-9_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9782937"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_79646","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":458,"numTeachers":28,"percentFrplEligible":31,"percentAsian":4,"percentBlack":7,"percentWhite":37,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":32,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"7 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"16.4:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_DISTANT"},"inStateSupporters":82.1,"schoolId":79646,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Desert Junior Senior High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Desert Junior Senior High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/muroc-joint-unified-school-district/desert-junior-senior-high-school/79646"}
