Being from Louisiana, so many have grown up hearing of Hurricane Katrina but not truly understanding all that happened in New Orleans. This book filled the gaps and helped them experience this event that changed our state forever. Several were able to make personal connections to the events. One student even shared that he went to the city to visit family while we were reading the book and said he had a whole different perspective as he drove past the very locations we were learning about. \r\n\r\nThank you for your generosity and dedication to improving not just my student's reading skills but also for building compassion and appreciation for the brave people of Louisiana.","fullyFundedDate":1758814777168,"projectUrl":"project/bringing-history-to-life-drowned-city/9649505/","projectTitle":"Bringing History to Life: \"Drowned City\" Graphic Novels","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Fabre","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp3784246_orig.jpg?crop=1455,1456,x0,y92&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1630095566800","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/mrsfabresyellowjackets"},{"teacherId":3784246,"projectId":9294954,"letterContent":"First, thank you again for your generous donation to our classroom. We have been reading our way through Seedfolks over the last few weeks and it has been better than I ever expected. Not only are the kids being given the opportunity to practice skills like drawing conclusions, making inferences, and using figurative language, they are also connecting with the characters in a very personal way. \r\n\r\nEach day we read one chapter and practice a reading skill as we discuss it. There are many so many examples that I could use to demonstrate how effective the book has been but my favorite happened just a few days ago. I have two Hispanic boys who are very quiet and do not usually answers questions out loud. When we got to the chapter about a young man named Gonzalo, all that changed. Both became very engaged and even offered meaningful answers based on their personal experiences. That has continued in the days since and our class is better for their participation. It was such a sweet moment to watch them connect with a book! This was only possible through your generosity! I can't wait for you to receive their handwritten thank you notes to hear in their own words how they have grown through this project.","fullyFundedDate":1748381854420,"projectUrl":"project/sowing-the-seeds-of-literacy/9294954/","projectTitle":"Sowing the Seeds of Literacy","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Fabre","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp3784246_orig.jpg?crop=1455,1456,x0,y92&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1630095566800","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/mrsfabresyellowjackets"},{"teacherId":310878,"projectId":8939510,"letterContent":"Your timely support has already made a powerful impact on my students.\r\n\r\nIn the midst of a national STEM competition, the printer you provided enabled my students to professionally communicate with our Parish President—an opportunity they may not have had otherwise. As the year continued, this resource became even more critical. Many students faced challenges completing their projects, and the printer was there to support them—especially for those who couldn't afford to print in color or lacked time to make the long trip across campus.\r\n\r\nThanks to your generosity, they were able to produce polished, high-quality artifacts at the last minute, helping them meet deadlines and expectations. They're excited to see their work come to life in print, and it's motivating them to put more effort into their assignments.\r\n\r\nSome students who need more hands-on learning especially appreciate having physical copies of their work. Because of you, I was able to put more literature about the Spanish speaking world into the hands of my students. They have learned about history and culture, cooking skills, and several words and phrases to add to their language word bank. A fun added bonus- I am also teaching a Latin 2 class this year, and even a few of them have asked to read books from the shelves, thus learning about a third language and culture. \r\nI predict that the library will have much more use in the second semester now that students understand their role in the classroom and are more comfortable with the idea of learning more and asking to borrow a next great read. \r\n\r\n I have included a couple of letters from a couple of my top explorers and pictures too, but the books have just started to catch more attention and interest, so trust me when I say I am so grateful for the impact this is making and will make in my classroom. I was bringing in books on my own merits and this process was slow and steady but you gave us a boost to offer a selection and variety of choices, which caught the attention of many of my students who might not read otherwise. \r\n\r\nI am very thankful, in the electronic age we are in, to people who still see the value of the good ol' pen and paper, slices of culture that my students can hold in their hands and travel to all the places I wish I could show them.
