Through this project, students investigated how large-scale carbon storage infrastructure can impact water chemistry, aquatic life, and environmental safety. Rather than studying this topic abstractly, students applied STEM skills to analyze real environmental data, evaluate monitoring gaps, and design a low-cost approach to help communities better understand and prepare for potential ecosystem changes.\r\n\r\nThe most powerful impact of this project was how students connected science to their own lived environment. Students learned to interpret sensor data, research carbon dioxide behavior in aquatic systems, and communicate scientific findings to residents, engineers, and local stakeholders. Several students who had never spoken publicly about science became advocates for environmental awareness, helping explain complex concepts like dissolved CO₂, pH shifts, and ecosystem stress in ways their neighbors could understand. This project showed them that technology is not just something they use—it is something they can apply responsibly to protect their community.\r\n\r\nUltimately, this experience empowered students to see themselves as contributors to public understanding and environmental stewardship. They gained confidence, technical skills, and a sense of responsibility as they worked to prepare their community for real-world infrastructure changes already underway. Regardless of competition outcomes, the project had lasting value by strengthening scientific literacy, civic engagement, and student leadership. We are grateful for Samsung's support in giving students the opportunity to use STEM to serve and protect their community.\r\n\r\nSincerely,\r\nMr. Z\r\nDenham Springs High School","fullyFundedDate":1751910142458,"projectUrl":"project/solve-for-tomorrow-2025/9308721/","projectTitle":"Solve For Tomorrow 2025","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Zweig","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp310878_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1473312465606","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/mark-zweig"},{"teacherId":3784246,"projectId":9649505,"letterContent":"My students greatly enjoyed Drowned City. We have been reading our way through Seedfolks over the last few weeks and it has been better than I ever expected. Not only are the kids being given the opportunity to practice skills like drawing conclusions, making inferences, and using figurative language, they are also connecting with the characters in a very personal way. \r\n\r\nEach day we read one chapter and practice a reading skill as we discuss it. There are many so many examples that I could use to demonstrate how effective the book has been but my favorite happened just a few days ago. I have two Hispanic boys who are very quiet and do not usually answers questions out loud. When we got to the chapter about a young man named Gonzalo, all that changed. Both became very engaged and even offered meaningful answers based on their personal experiences. That has continued in the days since and our class is better for their participation. It was such a sweet moment to watch them connect with a book! This was only possible through your generosity!
