The balance scale helped my kindergarteners learn about weight through hands-on play. They were able to visually and physically discover that heavier objects dip while lighter objects rise and they were able to weigh their classroom objects and count how many cubes it would take to equal the same wight as their objects. My students light up when they feel recognized and empowered. Desk pets give them that spark, along with a playful sense of purpose. We will use the pencil sharpener to help with these larger colored pencils used to decorate their habitats.
