Snacking for Success is making a meaningful difference in the daily lives of my first grade students. As our school district faces the loss of universal free lunch funding, many of our young learners are at risk of coming to school hungry or without access to consistent, nutritious snacks. This project helped fill that gap at a critical time.\r\n\r\nWith a steady supply of healthy snacks, my students are better able to focus, engage, and learn throughout the day. This allows for improvements in their energy levels, attention spans, and overall mood... especially during those mid-morning and afternoon hours when hunger often becomes a distraction. These snacks not only support their physical well-being but also help create a more equitable classroom environment, where no child will feel embarrassed or left out because they didn't have something to eat.\r\n\r\nMore than just food, this project represents care, consistency, and community support. It has shown my students that their needs matter and that there are people beyond our classroom who believe in their success. Your generosity has helped create a classroom where learning could thrive—and for that, we are truly grateful.","fullyFundedDate":1749170917649,"projectUrl":"project/snacking-for-success-keeping-my-student/9395854/","projectTitle":"Snacking for Success: Keeping My Students Focused and Fed","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Nazario","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10049867_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1749172571475","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10049867"},{"teacherId":5918686,"projectId":9221172,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your generosity. We are only 5 weeks into the school year and already my kindergarten students have had to take 3 diagnostic tests, 2 state standardized tests, and 2 chapter tests on their computers. Being at a Title I school, most students come in without basic supplies, and headphones are too expensive for many families. When taking these tests, as well as working on their computers, it is so important that students can hear what their computer is saying and are not distracted by others working in the room. \r\nEverything in the beginning of the year in kindergarten is auditory, since they cannot read yet. They depend on the computer to read all the questions and the answer choices to them, and without a good pair of headphones, this becomes a difficult task. The students love having their own personal headphones that are just for them. It gives them a sense of ownership in the learning they are doing. One student pointed at the chart and proudly said, \"That's my sound—I'm working on the /k/ sound!\"\r\n\r\nThe laminating sheets have made it possible to preserve our most-used visuals like mouth cues and our fun animal sound reminders—like the \"snake sound\" for /s/. Students work together to decode new words and practice reading fluently.
