The moment my students saw the materials, they immediately realized this wasn't going to be another day of desk-bound, silent work. As we began our journey toward building a \"Thinking Classroom,\" their initial hesitation gave way to genuine excitement; the sight of blank, colorful surfaces seemed to invite them to take risks they might otherwise avoid. One memorable moment occurred during a complex geometry lesson when I saw a group of students collaboratively mapping out a proof across a large, wall-mounted poster. They weren't just working through a problem—they were standing, debating, and physically rearranging their logic, fully engaged in the process of \"visible thinking\" rather than just looking for a single right answer.\r\n\r\nThese new resources have shifted the dynamic of our learning space, turning every vertical surface into an opportunity for exploration. The students have taken ownership of these tools, using them to visualize algebraic relationships and articulate their problem-solving strategies in real-time. As we move forward, our next steps involve integrating these posters into a series of \"problem-posing\" sessions. Instead of simply solving textbook equations, my students will be using the colored papers to design their own complex challenges to pose to their classmates. This shift toward student-led inquiry is exactly the kind of deep, conceptual engagement I hoped to foster, and it would not have been possible without your generous support.","fullyFundedDate":1767823566259,"projectUrl":"project/building-a-thinking-math-classroom/9736694/","projectTitle":"Building a Thinking Math Classroom","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Oracion","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9479379_orig.jpg?crop=1221,1221,x0,y109&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1752382725279","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9479379"},{"teacherId":10106018,"projectId":9524277,"letterContent":"Because of your generosity, our classroom now has the tools to truly bring math learning to life. The new printing resources have made it possible for every student to have clear, organized copies of guided notes, practice problems, and hands-on activities. Instead of sharing limited materials or waiting their turn, students can fully engage in the lesson in real time. Having their own printed copies allows them to annotate, highlight key vocabulary, show their thinking, and refer back to examples when working independently. It has strengthened both their confidence and their accountability.\r\n\r\nWhat has been most exciting is how much more interactive our lessons have become. Students love being able to physically work through problems, cut and sort examples, and keep structured notes they can study from later. For many of them, especially my English Learners, having visuals and written scaffolds in front of them makes abstract math concepts more accessible. The printed supports reduce cognitive overload and help them focus on understanding the math instead of worrying about copying everything down correctly.\r\n\r\nI have especially noticed growth in students who previously hesitated to participate. A few of my quieter learners now volunteer to explain their thinking because they have organized notes to guide them. Students who struggle with organization feel more prepared and less anxious during class and assessments. Your support has truly helped create a classroom where students feel equipped, confident, and ready to succeed in math. Instead of just solving formulas on a worksheet, my 8th graders became structural package designers.\r\n\r\nDuring our volume unit, students had to calculate the dimensions and volume of cylinders, cones, and prisms, and then design the exact 2D \"nets\" (the unfolded flat shapes) that would fold up into those exact 3D figures. A specific breakthrough moment happened when a group of students designed a cone. They calculated the precise arc length needed for the net, sent it to the Cricut to be cut from cardstock, and watched it fold together flawlessly with zero overlapping or gaps. One student blurted out, \"Whoa, the math actually worked exactly like it was supposed to!\" That shift from abstract numbers on paper to a perfect, tangible prototype was entirely made possible by the precision of this machine.\r\n\r\nNow that my students have mastered building and calculating basic 3D geometric figures, our next step is to push our design thinking into complex, real-world proportions. We are moving into a project where students will design a multi-part architectural model or custom product packaging that requires scaling a 3D object up and down using precise scale factors. They will have to budget their materials, adjust their dimensions mathematically in the design software, and use the Cricut to manufacture the pieces of their final complex structures. Your investment has given them a tool that we will continue to use for hands-on project-based learning for a long time to come!\r\n\r\nThis is also going to be useful for our next set of 8th graders for the next school year.","fullyFundedDate":1770431643001,"projectUrl":"project/precision-proportions-design-thinking/10035163/","projectTitle":"Precision & Proportions: Design Thinking in 8th-grade Math","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Oracion","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9479379_orig.jpg?crop=1221,1221,x0,y109&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1752382725279","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9479379"},{"teacherId":10262024,"projectId":9715249,"letterContent":"I'm writing to express my sincere gratitude for your amazing generosity in providing funding for our new school printer. In a sixth-grade math classroom, we are continuously working through difficult topics like Least Common Multiple (LCM) and Greatest Common Factor (GCF), which genuinely need a physical workspace for kids to visualize the math. Prior to your gift, I frequently had to locate a functional printer in a different building wing or restrict the practical activities I could offer. You have made it possible for me to provide my students with high-quality resources at the exact moment they need them, such as factor trees and multicolored number lines.\r\n\r\nFor our units on fractions, decimals, and integers, this printer is completely a game changer. These are some of the most challenging \"bridge\" subjects in middle school, and it makes a huge difference to be able to print out precise visual models for dividing decimals or clear, crisp coordinate planes for integer graphing. Giving my children individualized practice papers and \"math menus\" helps them develop a level of confidence that a computerized screen just cannot match because they are at a critical age where they are moving from basic arithmetic to algebraic thinking.\r\n\r\nI am grateful for your investment in our classroom and for showing to my studenrs that the entire community is rooting for their success. We can spend more time learning the numbers and less time worrying about supplies thanks to your generosity!","fullyFundedDate":1758820671889,"projectUrl":"project/printing-our-way-to-math-success/9715249/","projectTitle":"Printing Our Way to Math Success","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. ORO","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-3_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10262024"},{"teacherId":9479379,"projectId":9460531,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for donating to our classroom. It really helped a lot. The blocks we used it when we were describing equality to kids and moving blocks from one side of the equal sign to the other. We also used the geoboards during graphing linear equations. It really helped make our abstract concepts become concrete and tangible. The calculators were a big hit when it comes to solving. The kids are still needing practice when it comes to multiplication but with the help of the calculators, they are solving equations with ease and with confidence.","fullyFundedDate":1757649262199,"projectUrl":"project/empowering-our-8th-graders-with-hands-on/9460531/","projectTitle":"Empowering Our 8th Graders with Hands-On Math!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Oracion","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9479379_orig.jpg?crop=1221,1221,x0,y109&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1752382725279","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9479379"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_103857","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":1006,"numTeachers":45,"percentFrplEligible":87,"percentAsian":1,"percentBlack":17,"percentWhite":5,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":70,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":0,"percentMultiracialImputed":3,"gradesServed":"6 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"22.4:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":84.0,"schoolId":103857,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about David Millen Intermediate School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"David Millen Intermediate School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/palmdale-school-district/david-g-millen-intermediate-school/103857"}
