As you know, my students are mostly non-verbal. Despite this, they have shown in so many ways how much your donation has meant to us and will continue to mean for other children like them for years to come. Every day my mind is racing, trying to invent a new way to accommodate and modify lessons for my students. The things you have donated has made that process so much easier. Our biggest and loudest thank-you's could not express our gratitude.\r\n\r\nThe calming canopy is a huge hit in room 1310. Students go in there for sensory breaks, to complete works, or read a book. They have learned to be more gentle with our classroom items because of the way the canopy hangs. I took this as a learning opportunity to teach my students that if we are too rough with items in our classroom, they could fall down. They love the sensory escape the canopy gives! Below is a picture of how it looks hanging in my classroom. This is one of the best things I have ever had in my classroom. \r\n\r\nMy students are also learning how to manage their emotions! As a three, four, or five year-old, students have big feelings that they can't quite control or recognize! I did an adapted lesson with the book and mini plushes you donated to my classroom. The additional poster that came with the book was also a wonderful surprise! The students use this to identify their own emotions.\r\n\r\nThe lesson I did involved the 'Little Spot of Feelings' book. I collaborated with my students' Speech Language Pathologist to create PEC cards to make the book adapted! (These PEC cards are also in ALL of the books you donated to our classroom!) The students were given 1-2 feelings plushies, and as I read the book aloud, students would volunteer their PEC card or plushy if they saw their assigned emotion! I created a felt heart that the students could put their emotions PEC card into, to represent how all emotions are important, and we can store them safely in our hearts. \r\n\r\nAll the books that you donated to 1310 were transformed into adapted books!\r\nThese adapted books feature a PEC (Picture Exchange Communication) card on each page! As I read aloud each book, students are able to take the picture off of the page VIA velcro and hold onto it as we read the story. At the end of the story, I ask students to volunteer their PEC cards based on who has which item. Here are the PEC cards used in some of the books you donated! PEC cards help non-verbal students communicate effectively, build vocabulary, encourage communication, and express wants and needs.\r\n\t\r\n \r\nMy students also love nursery rhymes and stories! So the felt board story pieces are a huge hit in the classroom! They especially love the farm and the itsy-bitsy spider sets.\r\n\r\n\r\nThank you from the bottom of my heart for contributing these wonderful things to our classroom! All of these things help my students access a free and appropriate education and reach all of their goals. We appreciate you more than any words could say! \r\n\r\n \t\t- Miss Hailey and Room #1310","fullyFundedDate":1766587118427,"projectUrl":"project/sensory-for-preschool-disabilities-class/9965010/","projectTitle":"Sensory for Preschool Disabilities Classroom","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Mullins","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9619240_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1766024535762","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9619240"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_84279","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":721,"numTeachers":36,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":58,"percentWhite":30,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":3,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 6","studentTeacherRatio":"20.0:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":78.0,"schoolId":84279,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Dater Montessori School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Dater Montessori School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/ohio/cincinnati-public-schools/dater-montessori-school/84279"}
