These new books are more than stories—they are tools that help students develop critical reading skills, strengthen empathy, and build confidence. Each text introduces important skills like analyzing characters, identifying themes, making inferences, and using evidence from the text to support ideas. Historical fiction such as The War That Saved My Life and Refugee helps students understand history and practice perspective-taking, while stories like Wonder, Out of My Mind, and Hello, Universe focus on friendship, resilience, identity, and social-emotional growth. Students are learning to think deeply about the characters and situations in the books, and this strengthens their ability to analyze any text.\r\n\r\nIn our classroom, reading looks like a combination of guided instruction, collaborative discussion, and independent exploration. Students work in small groups to share ideas, ask questions, and connect the stories to their own lives. They practice summarizing, comparing and contrasting, and analyzing plot and character development. Having a variety of texts—from graphic novels like Smile and School Trip to novels like Counting by 7s and Out of My Mind—ensures that every student can find books that engage them and challenge them at the right level. Students have the freedom to explore books that interest them personally while building the skills they need to become thoughtful and independent readers.\r\n\r\nThe impact of these books has been clear. Students who were once reluctant readers are now eager to share their opinions and recommend books to their peers. For example, one student connected deeply with Brown Girl Dreaming, exploring themes of identity and perseverance, while another was inspired by The Lightning Thief and Percy Jackson's adventures. Students who enjoy mystery and problem-solving are drawn to books like One for the Murphys and The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane, giving them a chance to practice critical thinking in a fun way. Even students who struggle with reading fluency are gaining confidence through guided reading and book talks.\r\n\r\nOverall, these books have transformed our classroom into a vibrant community of readers. Your support has given students access to high-quality literature and allowed them to develop a love of reading that will last a lifetime. Every day, I see students growing as readers, thinkers, and empathetic individuals because of your generosity. Thank you for helping make this possible and for inspiring a new generation of learners who are curious, thoughtful, and ready to explore the world through books.","fullyFundedDate":1772811578714,"projectUrl":"project/turn-the-page-building-a-library-of-end/10125490/","projectTitle":"Turn the Page: Building a Library of Endless Adventures","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Rodriguez","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10356826_orig.jpg?crop=1242,1242,x0,y281&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1772648456820","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10356826"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_65300","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":93,"numTeachers":7,"percentFrplEligible":72,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":15,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":84,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"K - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"13.3:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_REMOTE"},"inStateSupporters":100.0,"schoolId":65300,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Dateland Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Dateland Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/arizona/hyder-elementary-school-district-16/dateland-elementary-school/65300"}
