Right now we're learning the standard algorithm for adding and subtracting larger numbers, and students go to the boards in groups of three to work through problems together. They talk through each step, compare their work, and agree or disagree with each other, but they have to justify their thinking either way. The amount of math talk is huge, and you can watch shared understanding develop right there at the board. The glue sticks are busy too: students paste practice problems into their notebooks, which have become a study tool they return to again and again.\r\n\r\nWhen I opened up the indoor recess centers, students scattered so fast I could barely finish explaining! The gears were an instant hit, and students kept coming over to show me what they had built. Keva Planks have sparked so much creativity, and UNO and Spot It are always in demand. Watching them dive in with that much excitement, and then proudly share their creations with me, was a moment I won't forget.\r\n\r\nNext we're moving into multiplicative comparison. These word problems quickly become multistep and are a real challenge for fourth graders, which is exactly why the whiteboards matter so much. The focus will be on showing different ways to arrive at the same answer, such as drawing a model, writing an equation, or breaking the problem into smaller steps. Because the boards are all around the room, students can see how other groups solved the same problem, which shows them new strategies and opens up even more discussion.
