The materials and specialized cardboard cutting tools you provided made our Holli Conger-Inspired Cardboard Portraits unit an incredible success.\r\n\r\nHaving safe, effective cardboard cutting tools gave students the freedom to manipulate dense, rigid materials with confidence and precision. Coupled with the collage supplies—from buttons for eyes to vibrant paints and paper—our artists turned simple recycled boards into dynamic, multi-dimensional relief sculptures. Your generosity directly expanded what our students could build, invent, and create. Our students felt valued as artists, thanks to your generosity. \r\n\r\nOur students used the new resources and safe cardboard cutting tools to complete a relief sculpture unit inspired by mixed-media artist Holli Conger. The specialized cutting tools allowed students to cut thick, rigid cardboard into complex shapes safely and accurately. Students started by drafting 2D planning sketches before using the tools to layer cardboard pieces, creating dynamic 3D depth. They brought their sculptures to life by combining paint with collage materials, using buttons for eyes and textured elements for hair and clothing. A memorable moment was seeing students realize they could turn simple recycled materials into recognizable icons like LeBron James, Coraline, Shrek, and the Lorax, as well as expressive self-portraits.\r\n\r\nThe reaction was immediate excitement and curiosity. Students were thrilled when they saw the specialized cardboard cutting tools—many had previously found cardboard too tough or frustrating to cut with standard scissors. Seeing tools built specifically for their hands made them feel like professional sculptors. They were equally eager to sort through the buttons, paints, and collage supplies, immediately brainstorming how to incorporate different textures and facial features into their characters.\r\n\r\nStudents are currently celebrating their completed artwork, which is proudly displayed on our main hallway bulletin board alongside their original design sketches so the whole school can see their creative process from start to finish. Building on the layering, spatial awareness, and tool safety skills gained from this unit, our next step is to transition from wall-mounted relief sculptures to fully freestanding 3D assemblage sculptures using recycled and mixed-media materials.
