Reading Stargirl is helpful for the middle grades, as the book inspires conversation and writing about how often people adjust their personalities, words, and actions in order to gain favor from others. At a stage in which social interactions play such a critical role, middle school students are developing their values, and this book offers timely insight for them. \r\nA Long Walk to Water is a tale of grit and determination, which many of our kids can relate or aspire to. The setting opened a window for our kids to learn about a way of life that broadened their world views. \r\nThose are just a couple of examples of the benefits that this project brought to my students.
