My 6th- and 7th-grade students truly appreciate having the garden, as it provides a welcome escape from indoor lessons. It's wonderful to have an outdoor space where they can work, especially since they enjoy being active and hands-on. Many of my students have very little contact with the outdoors and spend much of their free time on their phones.\r\n\r\nSo far this year, we've planted a variety of cacti and succulents. As soon as we receive some rain, we will begin planting our yearly crop of greens. I've already shared with the students that we have ranch dressing and Parmesan cheese for the salads, and they are very excited!","fullyFundedDate":1754249784536,"projectUrl":"project/we-wanna-grow-our-own-food-2526/9415595/","projectTitle":"We Wanna Grow Our Own Food! Kids come to school hungry for a variety or reasons. Some have very little food at home and others just refuse to eat the food that the school provides. I even have a few kids that stop by every single lunch for a snack. Regardless of the reasons, my students and I can rest assured knowing that they will always have full bellies. Teenagers seem to be perpetually hungry and are always happy to have snacks available. Besides, it creates a bit of good will between me and my more challenging students! When we first began work on it, there was mostly bare dirt and weeds. Over the course of the year, my 6th and 7th graders got to work on it, though. Little by little, we have cleaned it up, and now it's ready to plant.\r\n\r\nNow that it's the rainy season, we can get going. We plan on planting a crop of mixed greens this year so we can make salads. It's hard to get kids to eat healthy foods! I'll get them ranch dressing and parmesan cheese, and because they grew the food, they will have salads. I'm looking forward to seeing them chow down.
