Thank you so much for the healthier snacks, that not only provided rewards but also knowledge about selecting better snacks.\r\n We read the ingredients, did research on the ingredients and discussed the benefits of trying to select better snacks with better ingredients. Even though they were hesitant, they fell in love with the snacks. We learned that healthy is not always nasty and healthy food can be delicious.\r\n The snacks were used not only as a lesson in reading but also as rewards for completing assignments, earning high scores and behaving properly. These snacks were perfect for class review competitions as we closed out the lesson and did review games. There are no more excuses because they can come right into class and begin their assignments. There is no more having to wait on a charger that another student is using, everyone has their own charger!\r\n Most of all, during the day if a student's chrome book begins to get low on a charge, they know to just plug their chrome book into our charging station. As a Literacy teacher, I do not have a prescribed curriculum, which gives me the freedom to read about topics my students are genuinely interested in. It is an amazing thing to see students engrossed in a novel! \r\n\r\n\"Sanctuary\" was used in my after school club, Girls' Group. In this group, we talked about issues that women face across the world. One of the issues we talked about in-depth was immigration - an issue that hit hard for many of the club members, as either them or their parents are immigrants. We would read one chapter of the book as a whole group and then break off into smaller groups for discussion. The students who identified with the main character's struggle as the child of immigrants would often lead the conversations, explaining their families' experience to the other students. For \"homework,\" the students were tasked with reading current event articles to further understand how the novel connected to people's lived experiences. \r\n\r\nNot only were students able to connect \"Sanctuary\" to real world events, students were also able to explore the elements of a dystopian novel. While learning these elements, students were particularly interested in the loss of individuality and the idea of a perfect society that most dystopian novels have. Students created presentations to show what a society without individualism would look like, answering questions like \"What elements of my life would change if my right to make decisions for myself were taken?\" and \"How important is individuality in American society?\" \r\n\r\nGirls' Group students will be able to use these novels every year, which is a beautiful gift!","fullyFundedDate":1744290664017,"projectUrl":"project/womens-history-month-how-we-move-forwa/9140903/","projectTitle":"Women’s History Month: How We Move Forward Amidst Division","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Sidney McCurry","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-8_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/6931654"},{"teacherId":6931654,"projectId":9368802,"letterContent":"Thank you for your donation to my classroom! During the spring of last year, one of the members of our after school club, Girls' Group, lost her battle with cancer. She was a valued member of our school community and it was a devastating loss for the students that spent time with her after school. Following her passing, the students in Girls' Group wanted to do something positive with their grief and decided to make garden boxes to honor their friend.\r\n\r\nI no longer teach the girls that were in Girls' Group, as they moved onto 7th grade, but we gathered after school one day to build the garden boxes. The girls were absolutely thrilled to learn how to use a drill! They patiently took turns and helped one another figure out the instructions. After they put the garden boxes together, they painted rocks to decorate the outdoor space where the garden boxes will be placed. The games began when everyone had their review items completed and turned in for a grade.\r\n We ALL jumped for joy seeing all of these items that you sent us. We celebrated with oooooo's and ahhhhhhh's and yesssss! We came up with a game plan on how to utilize the snacks, games and pencils. After much deliberation we had a final class plan and it worked wonderfully. \r\n First everyone that had perfect attendance for review got mechanical pencils. The teams that answered all of the review questions on paper got the candy bags and students that were the top DOG in class got the bags also.
