In our Head Start classroom, we work every day to help our preschool students develop confidence, independence, social-emotional skills, fine-motor skills, and a love of learning. Having access to hands-on resources allows us to create meaningful experiences that engage our students and encourage them to participate actively in their learning.\r\n\r\nOne of the most exciting ways we are using the new resources is through movement and mindfulness activities. Our students have so much energy, and they benefit from having positive ways to move their bodies throughout the day. The yoga mats give us a special space where students can participate in stretching, simple yoga poses, breathing exercises, balance activities, and calming routines. We use these activities during transitions, after active play, and whenever students need an opportunity to slow down and reset. The children are learning that taking care of their bodies also means taking time to breathe, stretch, relax, and recognize how they are feeling. The yoga mat cleaner will also help us keep our materials clean and ready for students to safely use each day.\r\n\r\nWhen our students first saw the materials, their reactions were full of excitement and curiosity. They immediately wanted to touch, explore, and ask questions about what each item was for. They were especially interested in the camera. They loved the idea of taking pictures and seeing themselves and their classmates in photographs. For young children, being able to see themselves represented in their classroom experiences can be very meaningful. It helps them feel valued and reminds them that they are an important part of our classroom community.\r\n\r\nThe camera has also given us the opportunity to document special moments and capture our students as they learn and grow. We can photograph students participating in classroom activities, working together, creating artwork, exploring new concepts, and practicing new skills. We want to use these photographs as a way to celebrate student learning and share classroom experiences with families. Students will also have opportunities to make choices about photographs and participate in creating special keepsakes.\r\n\r\nThe crafting frames will allow our students to turn some of these photographs into meaningful projects. Students can decorate their own frames using different art materials, colors, shapes, and textures. This activity supports creativity and self-expression while also strengthening fine-motor skills as students cut, glue, place, and arrange materials. Once completed, the framed photographs can become special keepsakes for students to take home and share with their families. We hope these projects will help families see some of the wonderful experiences their children are having at school.\r\n\r\nThe copy paper and highlighters will support our everyday classroom instruction as well. We use paper for individualized learning activities, drawing and writing opportunities, classroom projects, family communication, and teacher-created resources. Highlighters help us emphasize important information and create engaging visual activities for our young learners. These supplies may seem simple, but they are materials that we use regularly and that help us provide learning experiences based on the individual needs and interests of our students.\r\n\r\nOur next steps are to continue incorporating these materials into our current classroom lessons and routines. We will continue using the yoga mats for regular movement, stretching, mindfulness, and body-awareness activities. Students will have opportunities to practice calming strategies and learn how movement can help them regulate their emotions and prepare for learning. We will also continue using the camera to document classroom experiences and involve students in photography-based projects. Students can help choose photographs, create decorated frames, and proudly share their finished projects with their families.\r\n\r\nMost importantly, we want our students to understand that learning does not only happen while sitting at a table. Learning happens when children move, create, explore, make choices, work together, ask questions, and express themselves. These resources help us provide a classroom environment where students can learn in many different ways and where their individual interests and abilities are celebrated.\r\n\r\nWe are incredibly grateful to the donors who support our classroom and believe in our students. Your generosity provides more than supplies, it provides opportunities. Because of your support, our students can experience movement, creativity, hands on learning, and meaningful opportunities to share their accomplishments with their families. Thank you for helping us create a classroom where our students feel excited to learn, proud of what they create, and confident in who they are. Your support truly helps our students learn, grow, and shine.","fullyFundedDate":1774963788758,"projectUrl":"project/strong-bodies-creative-minds/10071286/","projectTitle":"Strong Bodies, Creative Minds","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Taylor","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9499325_orig.jpg?crop=2316,2316,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1770051655393","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9499325"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_122853","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":null,"numTeachers":null,"percentFrplEligible":58,"percentAsian":1,"percentBlack":26,"percentWhite":64,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":3,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"US Census Data for the surrounding geographic area","percentHawaiianImputed":0,"percentMultiracialImputed":4,"gradesServed":"Not specified","studentTeacherRatio":null,"demographicsDataSource":"Census ZCTA","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"UNCLASSIFIED","ncesMetroType":null},"inStateSupporters":78.0,"schoolId":122853,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Watkins Head Start on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Watkins Head Start ","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/ohio/office-of-head-start/columbus-urban-league-watkins-head-start/122853"}
