Initially, my students did not want to take the hats as they thought it was not \"cool\". Once they found out there was a surprise inside the hat it became the hottest thing ever!! Our goal at the school was to make sure we addressed the economic struggles and food insecurity that many of our students face but just don't say. Offering the hats, gloves and takis was more than an \"ice breaker\" but a conversation piece. An opportunity to create open and honest discussions and the ability to establish dependability within the school community. \r\n\r\nWe gave away many of the hats, gloves and takis during the giveaway and we also placed some in our clothing closet. As you will see in the pictures not everyone feels confident in open spaces to advocate for themselves. Many times, we learn about these problems in private conversations. We reserved a set of these things with the ability to revisit them later when we encounter these students. \r\n\r\nThe theme of this year has been to look over the lid of the box. We actively recognize that many of our students that reside within our school zone do not know much about what is outside of the school zone.
