In a world where students spend so much of their school day working on computers, I am continually reminded of how much they enjoy the opportunity to put the screens away and create something with their own hands. There is something about a fresh poster board and a table full of colorful markers, Sharpies, scissors, and other supplies that can draw in even a student who was not particularly excited about the assignment at first. My students have been genuinely excited to have quality materials available to them, and I have loved watching them take greater pride in what they create.\r\n\r\nWe are putting these materials to work in my Advertising classes as students move from learning advertising concepts to actually applying them. They are creating visual advertisements and campaigns, making decisions about color, imagery, message, target audience, and persuasive appeal. Instead of simply answering questions about what makes an advertisement effective, they get to make those decisions themselves and then see their ideas become something tangible. The supplies also give students room to experiment, make mistakes, revise their ideas, collaborate, and discover creative abilities they may not have realized they had.\r\n\r\nOur next steps are to continue building on those skills with more complex advertising and branding projects throughout the year. Students will move from individual creative work into larger projects that require them to think more like real advertising professionals—considering an audience, developing a strategy, communicating a message, and explaining the choices behind their designs. Because of your generosity, I can focus on creating those learning experiences without worrying about whether we have enough poster board, whether the markers still work, or whether every student can participate. You didn't simply provide school supplies—you gave my students more opportunities to create, engage, and be proud of what they can do. They are glad to go out into the fresh air, blue sky, and sun after being at their desks and computers. The new texts focused on acceptance have encouraged thoughts and strengthened morale. They began the birdhouse building kits as an introduction to assembling, following directions, working together, and marketing. One house is complete, requiring painting. One of our students loves tools and is coordinated with his hands. One of our teachers introduced the class to sewing. Our teachers and students followed the embroidery directions after an introduction to sewing supplies and using the sewing machine.
