As part of this project, students studied Ringgold's work, learned about the concept of a \"tar beach,\" and discussed the powerful narrative behind this iconic image. None of this would have been possible without the supplies donated to my class.\r\nStudents learned how Faith Ringgold (1930–2024) was an influential American artist and activist, widely recognized for her intricate story quilts that explore African American history and the experiences of marginalized communities. Through her work, Ringgold challenged racial and gender stereotypes while elevating stories that have often been excluded from traditional museum and gallery spaces. Tar Beach tells the story of a young Black girl who dreams of flying above her Harlem neighborhood, symbolizing imagination, freedom, and the inherent right to envision a better future.\r\nInspired by Ringgold's perspective and signature floral borders, Coleman students created their own rooftop view of San Rafael, surrounding it with a vibrant flower border that pays tribute to her original design. Students across grade levels contributed in unique ways to bring the mural to life. Transitional Kindergarten, Kindergarten, second, and third grade students imagined and illustrated what they would want in their own homes. First and fourth grade students designed and created the floral border surrounding the scene. Fifth grade students added additional elements to the composition—including cars, trees, bushes, stars, houses, and imaginative details such as a fiery baseball and a walking duck—enhancing the mural with dreamlike touches.\r\nThis mural has been on display in the Coleman office for a month, and is now on display in the San Rafael public library for March. Towards the end of April, the mural will be hung in the Coleman MPR for long term display in the school. The donation of the project allowed all of my students to create art for public display, giving them school and community pride, along with making connections between their art and their community. Thank you for your invaluable contribution to my classroom and students.","fullyFundedDate":1764686545356,"projectUrl":"project/coleman-showcase-and-black-history-month/9891173/","projectTitle":"Coleman Showcase and Black History Month Project","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Sequeira","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10348628_orig.jpg?crop=844,844,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1762980551300","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10348628"},{"teacherId":10058331,"projectId":9419734,"letterContent":"Thanks to your generosity, I have been able to expand my classroom library to offer a wider variety of texts for the students. In 4th grade, we place a greater emphasis on reading to learn and comprehend. This year, I built a reading corner where I can highlight some of the new books to get kids excited about checking them out and reading them. These new books have been some of the most checked out books so far, and it has helped motivate kids to read in class to meet our current reading goal. Students are currently working on identifying character traits for characters in their books using explicit information from their text.\r\n\r\nThis year, I will also be tying in more art projects to support our learning. I am excited to use some of the tools donated to support the projects. This month, we will be diving into different art projects around Hispanic Heritage Month as we learn about the cultural significance behind this celebration. We will also be having some fun with our new Coco Loteria game to learn about this traditional game played in Spanish-speaking countries.\r\nThank you again for all your generosity and for supporting the learning of my students!","fullyFundedDate":1752773169594,"projectUrl":"project/books-games-and-art-fun/9419734/","projectTitle":"Books, Games, and Art Fun!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Acuna","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-6_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10058331"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_4318","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":662,"numTeachers":15,"percentFrplEligible":60,"percentAsian":3,"percentBlack":1,"percentWhite":33,"percentIndigenous":1,"percentLatinx":53,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"44.1:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_SMALL"},"inStateSupporters":85.5,"schoolId":4318,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Coleman Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Coleman Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/san-rafael-city-elementary-school-district/coleman-elementary-school/4318"}
