The students were surprised to have such a thoughtful and touching end to this Freedom Writers project. I knew getting the smaller versions of the notebooks would be just the thing to hook to students on journal writing. \r\n\r\nI wrapped the journals with their pens and presented them in a week of gratitude and gift giving. They were happy to have something that was just for them.\r\n\r\nI use the journals to have students write or draw about their life experiences and what matters to them. Just like Ms. Gruwell, I don't read the journal entries unless the students want me to. That has been uplifting as well, because the students have an outlet for their big ideas and feelings, and they have a way to get my help if they need it.
