Through these books, my students not only strengthened their reading and analytical skills but also learned to discuss themes like belonging, family, justice, and identity with depth and empathy. Our class discussions became some of the most meaningful I've ever seen, with students making text-to-self connections, comparing characters' struggles to their own experiences, and debating choices and consequences with maturity and heart.\r\n\r\nReading in my classroom became an active, exciting experience where students were eager to annotate, share insights, and even read ahead because they were so invested in the stories. It was amazing to watch them express their understanding through creative projects, art, and thoughtful discussions. A few students who were once hesitant readers found themselves completely absorbed by these novels and asking for \"just one more chapter.\"\r\n\r\nThese moments remind me why I teach and how books can truly change lives. Thank you for helping me give my students stories where they see themselves, their communities, and their strength reflected. Your support didn't just provide books—it created a space for powerful learning, joy, and connection.","fullyFundedDate":1754407994860,"projectUrl":"project/empowering-young-readers-womens-voices/9254028/","projectTitle":"Empowering Young Readers: Women’s Voices in Literature","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Leon","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9799845_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1728515504397","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9799845"},{"teacherId":9130902,"projectId":9066761,"letterContent":"Every year students read books. Sometimes they relate to the experiences and the characters and sometimes they learn about different cultures and experiences outside of their own. \r\n\r\nThis is why learning from different perspectives is important. It allows the reader to reflect on the things that make each culture different and beautiful. Story telling is what makes Indigenous Literature so important - generations of stories and myth passed down. Each story teaches the listeners a story. \r\n\r\nLast year, thanks to your support, students used these texts to reflect not only on Indigenous culture but their own family and generational stories. For example, the final assignment for \"The Way to Rainy Mountain\" forced students to think about the three voices that Momaday writes in: personal voice, myth and history. Each student reflected on their personal experiences that they've learned from, they learned about their families stories and the lesson learned, and most importantly learned how mythical and folklore stories are used to shape tradition in their families. \r\n\r\nIn addition to this, what made this project touching was that students were in their last year of high school and now spent time reflecting on how far their families and they themselves have made it. \r\n\r\nThanks to your support students not only left the classroom reflecting on indigenous story telling but reflecting on the significance of their stories being told. \r\n\r\nThank you for everything you do for education. These books have made such a huge impact in our English Department. Even though it's important to read the great classics, it is also important for students to feel seen and heard. \r\n\r\nIt was my goal to create a classroom culture that focused on inclusivity and culture, and these books have helped create that environment in my classroom. These novels have allowed us to explore different lives, point of views, cultures, and most importantly journeys. A journey is what I want students to go on when they read, rather than spending most of the time trying to figure out what \"old language\" is trying to say. This way, we have more time to discuss as a class and create projects that encourage students to research, collaborate, and reflect. \r\n\r\nAll of my students have benefitted from reading these novels in class this school year. Whether it was because they felt seen/heard or because they were able to add onto their existing knowledge, these students have been able to solidify their critical thinking skills, participate in educational and scholarly discourse, and open and honest conversations. \r\n\r\nAs a school, we are continuing to bring culture and inclusivity onto campus and even though this is a small way of doing so, it has made a big impact already!","fullyFundedDate":1720135363530,"projectUrl":"project/diversify-our-classroom-curriculum/8332189/","projectTitle":"Diversify Our Classroom Curriculum!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Palacios-Rubio","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9224035_orig.jpg?crop=2316,2316,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1714079573613","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9224035"},{"teacherId":9799845,"projectId":8869867,"letterContent":"Thanks to your generosity, my students have had the opportunity to engage with powerful, diverse stories that truly reflect their experiences and broaden their perspectives. One of the most impactful additions to our classroom has been \"The Hate U Give\", a novel that has sparked deep discussions about identity, social justice, and the power of speaking up. Through this book, my students have been learning how to analyze character development, identify themes, and connect literature to real-world issues. More importantly, they have been learning that their voices matter and that their stories deserve to be heard.\r\n\r\nReading in my classroom has become more than just an academic exercise. It is an experience that fosters critical thinking and empathy. My students do not just read; they debate, reflect, and challenge each other's perspectives. My students come into class eager to discuss Starr's journey. My students share their thoughts and found confidence in expressing their ideas through our class assignments and discussions. The books you helped provide have not only strengthened literacy skills but have also helped my students see themselves in the stories they read.\r\n\r\nYour support has made a difference far beyond the pages of these books. You have given my students stories that open minds, encourage dialogue, and inspire change.
