The students were thrilled when each package arrived and even started clapping and jumping up and down. We were all humbled to know that individuals were willing to help our classroom.\r\n The students get to use the fidget balls throughout the day during whole group time. When the children come to sit on the rug, they may select a squishy ball. Now that we have a variety of fidget balls, each student can select which one is best and most beneficial for him or her. The students are able to better focus during the whole group time with the additional tools.\r\n The children get to use the wobble seats throughout the day during whole group activities. Students take turns sitting on the wobble seats. The seats allow the kindergartners to quietly move and maintain focus during each activity.\r\n Lastly, all students have chair bands on their seats. The bands allow students to move their feet in a quiet manner. All of these tools have helped students better focus and improve their learning. The students are working on spelling, adding, and patterns with the different manipulatives for the light table. We use these books to tackle complex ideas—students debate ethical dilemmas, explore character motivations, and connect historical fiction to real-world events.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is vibrant and dynamic. You'll see students curled up with a novel, marking powerful quotes with sticky notes, or huddled in pairs deep in discussion about a character's decision. After finishing a book, we often launch into simulations, creative writing, or projects that let students apply what they've learned in hands-on ways.\r\n\r\nSome students who previously hesitated to engage are now eager participants. When I introduced the materials to the students, they were so excited. They moved from sitting crisscross applesauce to sitting on their feet to get just a little closer to the materials with a couple literally jumping up to better \"explore\" the items. \r\n\r\nThe first project with the paints was to paint an apple. They each were shown an apple and discussion took place about what an apple looks like: shape, bumps, stem and color. We had a myriad of sizes! The best part was seeing the pride on each of their faces when they had it complete.\r\n\r\nStudents will paint and stamp with many projects throughout the year. They also love to make their own designs in free choice time.
