We explored traditions connected to Lunar New Year and used them as inspiration for our own writing pieces. One of our favorite projects was creating a class book where each student wrote about a tradition, memory, or wish for the new year. Students brainstormed ideas using vocabulary like celebrate, tradition, family, and lucky, then turned those ideas into meaningful stories and illustrations. This project allowed my students—especially my English learners—to connect language with real-world experiences and express their identities in a powerful way.\r\n\r\nWhen my students first saw the materials, their excitement was immediate. The visuals, colors, and cultural elements sparked curiosity and meaningful conversations. They were especially drawn to the idea of red envelopes, decorations, and family traditions, which led to students eagerly sharing their own experiences and asking thoughtful questions. It created a sense of community in our classroom where every student felt valued and included. Even my quieter students found confidence in sharing because the topic felt personal and engaging.\r\n\r\nWe are also connecting this work to reading by exploring additional cultural texts and comparing traditions around the world.
