Part of my role as a librarian is to ensure all students have access to hand-on, challenging STEM activities. Having a set of Spheros Minis in the library enables me to offer those lessons to more students.\r\n\r\nTo introduce coding with Sphero Minis, pairs of students explored \"driving\" their robots via an iPad app with a digital tracker ball/ joystick. They then created obstacle courses to practice and improve their skills. After they were comfortable with this, we added block coding components. Block coding is \"drag and drop\" coding with preset instructions such as turning, reversing, pausing, etc. Block coding is a tangible way for students to understand the basic premise of coding - giving very detailed, specific instructions. This forces students to think critically about their objectives and the exact steps needed to achieve them.\r\n\r\nOne of the most fun and encouraging aspects of this first opportunity to use the Sphero Minis was how engaged the students were! They were sharing courses to challenge each other and sharing tips. They were really disappointed when the time ended. Also encouraging was how the classroom teachers were sharing ideas about how they could use them in the future – for designing cities, for demonstrating migration patterns and more. This was only one lesson in one grade – so much potential to use the Sphero Minis to bring learning to life. I'm deeply grateful for ONG's support for STEM education across Oklahoma.","fullyFundedDate":1753062278583,"projectUrl":"project/sphero-into-the-library-for-coding-and-h/9474352/","projectTitle":"Sphero Into The Library for Coding and Hands-On Learning!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Ringus","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp6773159_orig.jpg?crop=1448,1448,x0,y120&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1752782985959","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/ringus"},{"teacherId":9907151,"projectId":9364219,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for our Unique Learning Manipulatives! For students with limited verbal skills, they offer an accessible way to participate in language-rich activities and experience success expressing their ideas.\r\n\r\nAlready, our students are more engaged and confident. They're describing pictures, predicting what happens next, and sharing laughter as they invent their own endings. These moments not only strengthen vocabulary and sentence structure but also foster imagination, collaboration, and joy in learning.
