I often find myself reminiscing about my childhood and how much fun I had with my friends being outside playing or going on an \"adventure.\" My partner and I have tried to give our own children the same childhood experiences as we had growing up. Unfortunately, that is not the case for many of my students that I teach. There are a lot of other things that are \"easier\" to do inside than go outside and play. As a Physical Education teacher, I believe it is vitally important to teach my students the skills to live an adventurous life. That includes both the physical and mental skills to stay safe and make decisions when being adventurous. Most importantly I try to focus on providing them opportunities to gain confidence and desire to get outside to be adventurous.\r\n\r\nA lot of those opportunities are exposing my students to activities that they can participate well into their adult years. Pickleball is one of the fastest growing sports in America and I wanted to bring it into my curriculum to expose them to an activity they can play for a lifetime. However, I did not have the proper equipment to introduce this fun activity to my students. In fact, I did not have any pickleball equipment. With my small PE budget it would have taken me a few years to get enough equipment to include a Pickleball unit in my yearly curriculum. My principal encouraged me to submit a project on Donors Choose, so the project \"That Ball Doesn't Look Like a Pickle\" was created. \r\n\r\nThrough your generous donation toward this project my students now have the necessary equipment to learn Pickleball and experience adventure through this activity. The first day of Pickleball was basic. Since this was a new activity for a majority of my students I wanted to give them time to explore using the paddles and the wiffle balls. I gave them challenges to use the paddle and the ball in various ways to get them comfortable using the equipment. The students were able to get a feel of how to use their paddle effectively. With the newness of the equipment and skills came some frustrations which allowed students to work through the frustrations and experience success after adjustments were made. The next few days we continued to fine tune serving and hitting the ball over the net. Throughout the unit we were able to learn some basic rules of the game and then apply the rules we learned and the skills we gained into some pickleball games. The students had so much fun when we got to the games. I enjoyed seeing all of the smiles.\r\n\r\nAs we continue to implement this unit yearly the students will have a strong foundation of skills and knowledge of the game, so they are equipped to continue playing well into their adult years. This newly learned game will provide continued opportunities for them to stay active. We appreciate all that you have done to provide the funds for our Pickleball equipment, so we can live an adventurous life through Pickleball.","fullyFundedDate":1770257286807,"projectUrl":"project/that-ball-doesnt-look-like-a-pickle/10066169/","projectTitle":"That Ball Doesn’t Look Like a Pickle","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Maranell","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10259285_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1758561500506","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10259285"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_38342","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":100,"numTeachers":10,"percentFrplEligible":74,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":50,"percentIndigenous":1,"percentLatinx":44,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"10.0:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_DISTANT"},"inStateSupporters":84.2,"schoolId":38342,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Cleveland Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Cleveland Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/wisconsin/sheboygan-area-school-district/cleveland-elementary-school/38342"}
