After receiving and introducing a class set of Makey Makey in my classroom, my students were buzzing with creativity and collaborating with each other as they experimented with circuitry and problem-solving. They not only learned how circuits work, but it also sparked curiosity and a genuine desire to explore and design in ways that were both intuitive and exciting. Students connected bananas, lemons, aluminum foil, copper tape, and even playdough to the Makey Makey boards. To wrap up the unit, they used simple coding in Scratch or the Makey Makey app to turn objects such as cardboard, into playable musical instruments by connecting the circuits. I strongly believe that when students are excited, engaged and having fun in the classroom, they are more likely to remember what it is they are learning. At our school, we mainstream most of our special education students so there is often quite a range in learning levels in my classes. With your donation, I was able to purchase activities throughout this year that incorporated different learning styles to make the lesson accessible to all students. \r\n\r\nIn our cell unit, students first took notes in a more interactive style with the parts of the cell. Next they learned how if a cell was like a city, what parts of the city would be analogous to the cell parts. Then they created their own analogies for the cell. We finished off the unit with students learning about genetics and creating their own alien babies based on the traits of the alien parents. \r\n\r\nI always like to include movement in the lesson whenever I can. While studying about the solar system, students loved getting to move around the classroom during the scavenger hunt review. \r\n\r\nOne of my favorite purchases this year was the \"Trashketball\" template. This was my first time using it and it was a definite hit with all my students. Students worked in teams to answer the questions correctly. Every correct answer earned a point and an opportunity to earn bonus points by shooting into the trash can. Students had so much fun working as a team while competing with each other. The students in my math classes are ones that specifically struggle in math and need additional support to reinforce basic math concepts. Using the Teachers Pay Teachers gift card paid for by your donations, I was able to find many fun and engaging activities. \r\n Some of the activities that the students enjoyed were \"Trashketball\" and \"Punch It.\" Trashketball really brought out the competitive side of students as they worked together to solve math problems and then would race to shoot for points. Students also really liked activities like scavenger hunts, that incorporated movement around the classroom. Scavenger hunts worked extremely well because students were able to work independently with little help from me. They began asking how much each of the items would be and started counting their Bear Bucks to see if they would have enough for the items they wanted. To be able to offer Lego mini figures, thinking putty and snacks for our students is a huge incentive.
