{"monthlySchoolDonationEnabled":true,"callToActionDisplayName":"Clara Barton High School","outOfStateSupporters":32.4,"allowSchoolLevelGiving":true,"hasFundedProjects":true,"projectGratitudeData":[{"teacherId":9806132,"projectId":10189480,"letterContent":"For my students who are currently in counseling, filmmaking provides and offers a profound therapeutic outlet, a non-verbal language to express complex emotions, trauma, or internal experiences that are often difficult to put into words. \r\n\r\nWhen one of my students opened the box to the Apple Macbook Pro, her face lit up, as she carefully began to remove the computer from the outer mailing box. She immediately began asking questions like \"When can we start using it?...Do you want me to help set it up?\" It was wonderful to watch the other students' inquisitive reactions and curiosity spark as they discovered the new laptop as they arrived. One asked \"Do we all get one?\" and I responded accordingly. I can only hope that one day in the near future something like this would be possible.\r\n\r\nNevertheless, it is sometimes quite amazing how computer savvy some of my students are while they are still challenged in other ways of their learning. However, when it comes to editing, this will be a whole new world for most of the students and this is where the learning curve begins. They are extremely excited about working on the new Apple Macbook Pro laptop along with the Apple HomePod Mini speaker; including the laptop backpack to carry it all in. \r\n\r\nThe mini-speaker alone has a built-in Siri which offers far-field voice recognition powered by a four-microphone array, allowing hands-free control of smart home accessories, music, and communication without needing to physically reach or tap the device. My students love this feature as some use Siri on their personal phones.\r\n\r\nThe mini speaker also provides VoiceOver, which provides spoken description and screen reader capabilities integrated through connected Apple ecosystem devices during setup and management. This is helpful for some of my special needs students who benefit more from assistive technology.\r\n\r\nThe NYC Department of Education in collaboration with Adobe has allowed staff and students access to top notch software like Photoshop, Lightroom and Adobe Premiere Pro; which is great because they're costly. The Macbook Pro is user friendly and ideal for utilizing it with the Adobe software.\r\n\r\nThe smiles on their faces were infectious. If only you could experience their joy, their ideas for future projects and their all around enthusiasm. I applaud all of you, as you should applaud yourselves for making this dream a reality. Most of them know basic skills from using their smartphones as point and shoot cameras, but many of them do not know how to use cameras like the Sony Alpha 6400 with more intricate features and detachable lens. I wish you all could have seen their eyes open up with pure curiosity as soon as they began testing out the equipment.\r\n\r\nAs we know microphones are built in with cameras, but when the wind and other outside noises overcome what is expected to be on film it becomes a great disappointment. This is why wireless microphones are necessary. The students were enthused when learning how to use them and witnessing how clear and crisp their voices sounded after recording themselves. Clipping the Rode wireless microphone on each other or just simply holding it in their hands as they conducted a mock interviews, released smiles and laughter beyond the scope of my words, it was a priceless site to see.\r\n\r\nThey cannot wait to go outside for a local field trip, even if it is across the street to the Botanical Gardens or in the park to begin filming and taking pictures. One student said \"I could never afford a camera like that.\" It was such a sentimental authentic statement, that tears began to well up in my eyes, but I managed to hold them back. If it were up to me all of my students would be rewarded with a camera.\r\n\r\nYour donations and kindness, have helped my students in their healing process through the viewfinder of their creative expression. We cannot express enough how grateful we are to start on a new journey that can grow beyond our classroom walls. This is all happening because of you! I am a School Social Worker in a New York City Public high School. There are times when I speak to people outside of NY about schools, they have a preconceived notion of what the environment is like, focusing on dangers, and safety concerns.\r\n\tWith this new generation of students more than safety concerns, teachers, staff and administrators are fighting against convenience, instant gratification, screens, trauma and poor social skills. When I began my journey in this school, I vowed to make my office a safe space for students who needed therapeutic services in different forms. There are some students who see me for individual counseling, groups, or just some social interaction. The social interaction piece is where the puzzles come in. \r\n\tOne day I was thinking of ways to bring more students in and build a bigger community outside of just hanging out during lunch. I chaperoned a school trip with my daughter to the Brooklyn Children's Museum, and she asked me to buy her a puzzle from the gift shop. The light bulb went off in my head, a puzzle is something that could be completed by multiple people without the pressure of speaking to or knowing the person. I called it the community puzzle corner. \r\n\tWe started with 300- and 500-piece puzzles, I watched as students who didn't know each other started to speak to the person next to them asking about pieces. As more students found out about it they began to ask for more complicated puzzles we moved to 1000 pieces. These students who many times told me they were \"too old to play kid games\" began seeking out things that allowed them to behave like children, even if it was just in my office. Having the puzzles, markers and positive affirmation coloring books has made a true difference in my space. Having the puzzle table that allows us to stop losing pieces is a game changer. \r\n\tThis is all to say that I thank you and truly appreciate your commitment and donations to all my kids (students). This has and will continue to have a huge impact on my space for years to come as new students who haven't tried puzzles now try something new and make friends in the process. Since receiving the materials in October, we have read in the reading corner every Monday for twenty minutes and writing about our reading for ten, and on other days students read for ten minutes before or after their reading intervention lessons. \r\n\r\nThe flexible seating and lighting have made students say that the area feels \"cozy\" and \"like a good place to read\". They were so excited when the cushions came we needed to create a sign up sheet so that they could decide who got to use the cushions each day.
