The books make complex ideas more accessible, allowing students to grow in confidence while still being challenged.\r\n\r\nIn our classroom, reading is active and engaging. Having multiple copies of the same titles allows students to read and discuss books together, which builds both their comprehension and their confidence. Through these texts, my students are learning how to analyze characters, identify themes, and cite evidence to support their ideas all skills that are essential for both academic growth and lifelong reading.\r\n\r\nIn our classroom, reading now looks more like a community. Students gather in small groups, book in hand, and engage in thoughtful conversations about what they've read. They annotate important passages, share predictions, and even respectfully disagree with one another as they practice critical thinking.\r\n\r\nSeveral students who were previously reluctant readers are now some of the most enthusiastic participants. One student in particular, who used to quietly avoid independent reading, has been eagerly waiting for her group's book club meetings. She said, \"It feels like we're in the story together,\" which shows just how powerful it is for students to have access to books they can share and discuss.","fullyFundedDate":1747428477895,"projectUrl":"project/growing-minds-one-book-club-at-a-time/9353098/","projectTitle":"Growing Minds One Book Club at a Time","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Carabajal","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp672224_orig.jpg?crop=716,716,x221,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1620215358487","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/mrs-carabajal"},{"teacherId":672224,"projectId":9192287,"letterContent":"My students are using the donated supplies daily, and they have made a huge difference in our learning routines. For example, when we do close reading activities, students now use highlighters to mark important details and evidence in the text. During group discussions, sticky notes allow them to jot down quick thoughts, questions, and connections to share with their peers. One recent project was a \"book tasting,\" where students rotated through different genres. They used sticky notes to record their first impressions and favorite lines, and then kept them in page protectors to build their personal reading portfolios. Having the right tools made the activity feel more engaging and organized.\r\nThey were so excited! Many of them immediately grabbed a highlighter or sticky note and asked, \"Can we use these today?\" Their faces lit up knowing that they had their own supplies to use, and several students mentioned how helpful it would be for keeping track of their reading and ideas. The excitement carried over into our lessons and gave them a boost of confidence.\r\nRight now, we are working on strengthening our reading comprehension and writing skills through a cross-genre unit. The next step is for students to use the donated supplies to annotate texts, organize their notes in page protectors, and prepare evidence for short written responses. These tools are helping them build independence and develop strategies they'll carry with them throughout the school year.","fullyFundedDate":1746783040809,"projectUrl":"project/empowering-young-readers-and-writers-wit/9192287/","projectTitle":"Empowering Young Readers and Writers With Essential Supplies","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Carabajal","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp672224_orig.jpg?crop=716,716,x221,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1620215358487","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/mrs-carabajal"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_8173","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":635,"numTeachers":55,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":1,"percentWhite":1,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":96,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":0,"percentMultiracialImputed":0,"gradesServed":"6 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"11.5:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":79.3,"schoolId":8173,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Christa McAuliffe Middle School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Christa McAuliffe Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/texas/southwest-independent-school-district/christa-mcauliffe-junior-high-school/8173"}
