When the packages first arrived and we unboxed the materials together, the classroom erupted with excitement and natural curiosity. Students immediately gathered around the equipment, marveling at the tubing, pumps, and seed trays while asking eager questions like, \"Wait, we can actually grow full plants inside without any soil?!\" Seeing their eyes light up as they realized they would be building and managing a modern, living ecosystem right inside our room was an unforgettable moment.\r\n\r\nSince setting up the system, our classroom has transformed into a hands-on botanical laboratory where science concepts truly come to life. Currently, my students are actively using the hydroponics station to conduct a multi-week investigation into plant biology, water chemistry, and sustainable agriculture. In a recent hands-on activity, student teams took charge of testing and adjusting the water's pH levels, carefully measuring liquid nutrient doses, and logging the rapid root development of our first batch of leafy greens. Instead of simply reading about photosynthesis and nutrient absorption in a textbook, they are directly observing these processes every day as they track growth rates and monitor ecosystem health.\r\n\r\nAs we move forward with our current project, our next steps will push their critical thinking even further as the plants reach full maturity. Students will begin experimenting with slight variations in light exposure and nutrient concentrations to analyze how these variables impact overall crop yield and growth speed. They will graph their data, draw comparisons between soil-based and soil-free farming, and ultimately harvest their produce to celebrate the success of their hard work. Your generous support gave our class a front-row seat to modern agricultural science, and we are so grateful for the lasting impact you have made on our learning!","fullyFundedDate":1778527149275,"projectUrl":"project/growing-scientists-hydroponic-gardening/10126597/","projectTitle":"Growing Scientists: Hydroponic Gardening in 5th Grade","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Wilford","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9618322_orig.jpg?crop=1242,1242,x0,y571&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1772477788263","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9618322"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_77359","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":354,"numTeachers":28,"percentFrplEligible":51,"percentAsian":1,"percentBlack":1,"percentWhite":87,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":2,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":0,"percentMultiracialImputed":6,"gradesServed":"6 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"12.6:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"TOWN","ncesMetroType":"TOWN_REMOTE"},"inStateSupporters":93.3,"schoolId":77359,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Chillicothe Middle School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Chillicothe Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/missouri/chillicothe-school-district-r2/chillicothe-middle-school/77359"}
