Since I have set it up in my classroom, my small shelf of place-based books (Yup'ik, Alaskan, and indigenous stories) have drawn a lot of attention, and not just from my students! Elders, other teachers, our educational support personnel, and even our school secretary were so excited to see these stories representing their history and culture. Several of the books are currently already on loan to other teachers for their personal reading or for them to incorporate into their classes. When I showed these books off to my students, they were so excited. They immediately asked if they could switch out the books they were reading for these. They were so excited to start reading these stories to connect to the characters or learn more about their culture. Several students asked if they could take them home to read over the weekend (which they have never done before!) In a world where most media reflects a culture other than their own, my students are now able to come into my classroom and find stories that represent them. Just having the books on my shelf helps with the climate in my room. Thank you for showing my students that they are not alone in their experiences. Thank you for showing them that their history and culture are valued, even by those who are not a part of it. Thank you for showing them that there are people that care about them and their connection to their heritage.
