Every year our fourth and fifth graders participate in the Battle of the Books. Our district usually purchases the required books for this club. However this year with funding being cut we were not able to get enough books.\r\n My students love coming into the library to check out this year's EBOB books. They also read them in small groups and some teachers use them for a class read aloud where each student has a copy. This year we were unable to make this happen. The students kept coming in asking for copies of our new titles and were very disappointed when I told them that we did not have those books. The day these books came I have never seen the kids so excited for new books. \r\n These books have been flying off the shelves and teachers have been checking them out to use in their classrooms. They use them when they come to the library for independent work such as doing Nearpod lessons or working on their Digital Citizen lessons where they earn badges. They also use in small group rotations. We were unable to do any of this before we got our adaptors. \r\n Now classroom teachers don't have to send head phones and adaptors to specials with them. While I have taught middle school for many years, transitioning back to elementary needed some additional support. I felt a little more comfortable with the older elementary students. I wanted to give students the opportunity to listen to a story and then develop a creative solution. In the images, you can see just a few of the designs my younger students created after we had to figure out how to catch a turkey. \r\n\r\nStudents were excited to see the boxes come into the room. I did not open until my younger students were in the room. A funny side note, because I see each class one day a week, I resealed the box so the big reveal could be done for each class. \r\n\r\nThe younger students (who this project was targeted for) were very creative in their approach to designing various traps. Some students were so proud of their projects that they created short videos to explain how their traps worked. \r\n\r\nThis project has opened up opportunities for STEM in the younger grade levels. They are always excited about coming to class and love to design and build.
