At first most of my students had never heard of them and were unfamiliar with what you could do with them. We looked at all the different characters we have and the stories that go along with them. The first one we did as a class was the Gruffalo. They were excited about that one because we had gone on a field trip in the fall to the see the Children's Series play at the Cleveland Playhouse Square. It was great to connect the play with the Tonie and listen to the story and the songs that went along with it. It brought the text to life in the classroom. So far the kids have been able to use the Tonies in small groups during center rotations. Also, they have been a free choice on Fun Fridays for a leisure activity with reading, song, and dance. The students and myself thank you for all your donations. Your donations have encouraged us to want to be more disciplined in learning and respectful. The students were so excited when the boxes came with all the goodies in them. So far the kids have enjoyed eating the popcorn, cookies, rice krispies, and assorted snacks during snack time. They really like having a variety to choose from and it gives them something to put in their belly before they go home for the evening. I'm not sure when their next meal will come but I know that they leave the classroom with something and can come to school to get two meals each day. For students that come to school late, they can have a granola bar to tie them over until lunch. It has also helped by given them an extra incentive to read. The students love going into the treat box and being able to pick out a special prize or treat for their accomplishment. It is so good to see the students want to learn and be able to feel good about what they are learning and the snacks really help them want to improve in their learning.
