The cast of characters in the novel mirrored many in my class as some with learning abilities, family hurts, and insecurities could see that they are not defined by what data often shows but that they can excel with the support of caring teachers, their families, and themselves to help them mentally, socially, academically and more. \r\n\r\nThe characters in the novel had varied histories that they were able to share, intimately, in a setting, designed for them, and them alone weekly in the ARTT Room (A Room To Talk). My students were able to see their stories in the group's sharing, happiness, and sadness as they voiced, without guilt and shame how they felt and what they hoped for. The true meaning of Harbor Me became a new concept for my students to grasp knowing that we are truly a village and need each other, no judgment. Through reader's theater, my students read the novel like a script, with feeling. They realized being venerable often answers questions and gives solutions.
