As the packages start coming in, they ask me to open them in front of the class so they can be the first to see what they now have access too in the classroom. They really enjoyed writing on the new dry erase boards and showing their work. Once they were done with their work, they asked to share their thinking and used the manipulatives to show how the two addends come together to make the sum.\r\n\r\nOne game that we played was using the squishy's to determine the sum of two numbers. The student with the greater sum got a point. Using the squishy, the students were able to add and then compare using the squishy's as a visual to show which sum was greater. \r\n\r\nThe squishy manipulative also helped the kids who have a little bit of math anxiety. They were squeezing them, but yet used them appropriately to learn. This is all thanks to the wonderful people who contributed to this project to making learning fun. The students will continue to use these fun learning tools to explore new math concepts. This is a mandatory part of our 8th grade curriculum. \r\n\r\nAlso, the addition of more pens is wonderful. With limited funds for the classroom, we can go through hundreds of pens in 2 months! Replenishing is not always easy.
