The students could not wait to get to the next learning station to see what math tool they were going to use. I know that they really appreciate the items that were donated. \r\n\r\nAll the tools were used in different learning areas for hands-on activities. I had students counting, making groups of ten to count on, making arrays, and finding missing addends without any of them off task. These tools worked well for so many different math concepts. It made me happy to see my kiddos on task and enjoying learning as they worked with the math tools.\r\n\r\nMy students also liked that they had their own math pouch to put their supplies into. My students will have the opportunity to explore the owl pellets during our unit on organism interactions and will have the opportunity to dissect the frog on the last full day of the school year. The owl pellets give my students the opportunity to see predator-prey interaction and enjoy being able to determine what prey the owl ate based on the bones inside the pellet. The frog sums up our year of life science and gives my students the chance to see the inside anatomy of an organism after we have discussed the body systems. My students also enjoy being able to determine if they have a boy or girl frog based on the internal anatomy. Each year these are two labs that my students really enjoy and look forward to. Many students are either visual or kinesthetic learners. For this reason, hands-on activities are imperative to have to encourage these learners to explore and develop their thinking. Students are able to use the tools to use place value to regroup when adding and subtracting. The students used the chips to make 10 to regroup and were able to see the process rather than just try to memorize an algorithm.\r\n\r\nDry erase markers and dry erase boards are used every day in the classroom to show their work and explain their thinking. Unfortunately, at this time of the year many of the dry erase markers are drying out because of usage.
