Because of your donations, my students were able to explore Long Way Down by Jason Reynolds in both its poetic and graphic novel forms—and the difference it made in their engagement was remarkable.\r\n\r\nIn class, we focus on visual close reading and analyzing the connotations of words—skills that help students move beyond simply understanding what happens in a story to interpreting how and why the author crafts meaning. The graphic novel edition opened new doors for many students, allowing them to make those same analytical connections through both imagery and text.\r\n\r\nReading days in our classroom have taken on a whole new energy. With the addition of the graphic novel, students who were once hesitant readers dove in eagerly. I noticed that during our Friday discussion days, their responses became much more thoughtful and substantial—evidence that they were not only reading, but truly thinking about what they read.\r\n\r\nOne question we explored deeply was, \"Is revenge worth it? What are its costs?\" The accessibility of the graphic novel helped students grapple with this moral dilemma in a more nuanced way. Several students who had previously struggled with sustained reading were suddenly among the most vocal in our class discussions.\r\n\r\nYour contribution has made reading more inviting, analytical thinking more natural, and class discussions more meaningful. Thank you for helping my students connect with literature in a way that feels relevant, powerful, and truly their own.","fullyFundedDate":1755641509512,"projectUrl":"project/poetryshakespeare-supporting-resources/9612180/","projectTitle":"Poetry/Shakespeare Supporting Resources","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Martinez","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10182548_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1755365504279","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10182548"},{"teacherId":5876284,"projectId":9297493,"letterContent":"On behalf of the students and staff of [School Name], I would like to sincerely thank you for your generous donation to our Culinary Cooking Class. When we handed out the traditional Hawaiian-style candy leis, the students' faces lit up with delight. Many of them couldn't stop smiling as they admired their beautiful leis, taking photos with their friends and teachers. The leis have become a symbol of our students' growth and achievement, reminding them of the support and care they've received during their time in middle school.\r\nAs our students wear their leis, they're filled with confidence and pride, knowing they've made it through a significant milestone in their educational journey. We've seen students bonding over their shared experience, exchanging stories and advice as they look forward to high school. In class, we've been discussing the importance of perseverance and resilience, using the leis as a reminder of how far they've come. One student even wrote a heartfelt poem about the experience, expressing gratitude for the love and support they've received.\r\nAs we move forward, our students will continue to reflect on their middle school experience and look forward to the opportunities high school will bring. In our upcoming lessons, we'll be exploring career paths and setting goals for their future. The \"Sweet Transitions\" project has been a perfect catalyst for these discussions, helping our students feel seen, heard, and celebrated as they embark on this new chapter.
