It seems like a silly thing to ask for but it really helps my students do a lot of math problems in a short amount of time. My students are far below grade level and I have to do whatever it takes to get them to grade level or at least close to it. \r\n\r\nOne way that I have found students to be more engaged in learning is for them to have a competition between each other. I give them a problem and they work it out with a partner on a white board with dry erase markers. It amazes me to see how much more work they will do with dry erase makers than with a pencil. It's also much easier for them to fix their mistakes. When they get the problem correct they get a chip and the group with the most chips at the end of the competition gets to leave first to lunch. I have found that they learn so much more this way and therefore we use the markers all the time. \r\n\r\nI am so glad that you have helped a group of children that you don't even know. My students have struggled a lot throughout their short lives and every little bit that I can do for them is really appreciated-even if they don't say so. I had NO idea that students would work so hard to learn math so that they could have their own Rubik's Cube. If I had known that the students would reach 50% on Khan Academy just to earn a Cube, I would have done this years ago. \r\n\r\nIf you could see them playing with it, your heart would melt. They take the Rubik's Cube outside and during lunch they have \"competitions\" to see how far they can get. They are constantly talking about which one they have (the 3x3x3 or 4x4x4 or 5x5x5) and how much they can do. If my 7th grade students are able to reach 50% on 8th grade Khan Academy, they can earn another one. What more could I ask for with students who are at risk? They are so motivated to reach their goal.
