My second grade intervention group used the place value frame to practice building the three-digit number they rolled on the dice. Then they used arrows to create the expanded and standard number. While my third graders focused on three-digit number regrouping with the same place value frames.\r\n\r\nWhat stands out to me as my students were introduced to new material is pure joy. They were excited to be the first to use the brand new materials. I had my older students be \"product reviewers.\" They tested the different activities, then identified the best features and how the activity helped them learn. \r\n\r\nI have been working with a special education teacher on how she can incorporate the place value frames into her Number Talks. It is understandable to want to focus on correct answers, but sometimes we need to let students work through productive struggle. Choosing a wrong answer for an example and helping them fix the answer will provide a deeper understanding of the concepts. \r\n\r\nI am also using these materials to present a session on place value at the Kentucky Center of Mathematics conference this year.
