Because of you, I was able to supply my \"materials corner\" with items my students love and look forward to using! The erasable highlighters and the transparent sticky notes were a particular hit. These allowed students to make margin notes in the textbook (gasp!) and I've got to say: my students' comprehension of The Odyssey was the best it's ever been. I believe your donation is largely to thank for that win. Students were able to annotate in ways that helped them understand the text and make it memorable. We look forward to similar success with our next classic, Romeo and Juliet!\r\n\r\nThe \"matchbook summary\" project was also a huge hit, as students were able to let their creativity shine thanks to the folders, index cards, and other art supplies you provided. I've uploaded a few pictures of these for your enjoyment.\r\n\r\nThere were a number of less exciting, but arguably more important, classroom items I was able to purchase because of your donation. I thank you for our year's supply of paper and pencils that keep kids writing and thinking each day. I thank you for the sticky notes that keep us organized and collaborative. I thank you for the stapler and staples we need more often than one might think. In short, thank you for gifting us a well-stocked, functional high school English classroom in which students can create and explore on a daily basis. For this project, students chose a dystopian novel of interest to them, and discussed the novel each week with a book group of students who chose the same book. It is a joy to see students deepen their literary analysis skills, improve their discussion skills, and come away with a deep understanding of the text and its modern implications. \r\n\r\nThis year's project was particularly successful due to the wide range of books I was able to offer students! I had an unprecedented 50% of students choose these books for their recent independent reading project! For reference, last semester, only 32% of my students chose this high-level literature for their projects, and only because I required it of my students taking the class for Honor's credit. This semester, I had students from both my Honor's classes and Core classes select these books. \r\n\r\nIt was incredibly satisfying for me to see core students who typically struggle with English engage with this literature. For example, I had English Language Learners pick up graphic novel versions of Beowulf and The Great Gatsby. This project also allowed students of color to easily pick up great literature penned by authors of color. I was so glad to have copies of Beloved, The Color Purple, and Their Eyes Were Watching God readily available and honored alongside other \"greats\". \r\n\r\nFor this Independent Reading Project, students wrote summaries at set intervals as they read. Then, they wrote a theme statement with three pieces of text evidence to support their claim. Students featured their books, their summaries and their themes via a poster project that is displayed publicly in the hallway of the English wing. (Pictures of these projects are included!)\r\n\r\nThanks again for your generous support! It's impacted so many students already, and will continue to do so many years hence.","fullyFundedDate":1734304393523,"projectUrl":"project/college-bound-readers-the-oldies-are-st/9004206/","projectTitle":"College Bound Readers: The Oldies are Still Goodies!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Weil","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp3025635_orig.jpg?crop=350,350,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1607025323499","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/jillweil"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_35470","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":402,"numTeachers":24,"percentFrplEligible":50,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":63,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":32,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"16.8:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_DISTANT"},"inStateSupporters":39.3,"schoolId":35470,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Cascade High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Cascade High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/washington/cascade-school-district-228/cascade-high-school/35470"}
